Bird is a leader in Canadian construction, building a dynamic and inclusive culture that empowers employees to unlock their potential. We are looking for a Student HSE Coordinator to join our Ottawa office for a 4‑month co‑op starting in May 2026.

Responsibilities
  • Support site supervision with implementation and management of the Bird Safety Program.
  • Works closely with Project Management and Supervision regarding the development of site‑specific safe work practices, procedures, and hazard assessments.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled health and safety inspections of the workplace and documents/posts these inspections in conspicuous locations on the job site.
  • Follows up on all corrective actions’ items noted during ongoing inspections in the workplace and participates and/or takes the lead role in the investigation into incidents in the workplace.
  • Maintain statistics and records and monitor accident/incident frequencies and safety violations.
  • Works with Project Management and Supervision to ensure trade contractors comply with the Bird Construction HSE program and applicable regulatory acts and regulations.
  • Participates and/or leads regular scheduled safety meetings.
  • Liaises with regulatory authorities to promote safety on the job site.
  • Provides site specific orientation to workers and/or visitors new to the job.
  • Provides first aid assessment and treatment for workers.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a Health, Safety, and Environment diploma or Engineering program.
  • Will complete at least one more semester of education following your internship and possess a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Ability to lead and operate within an environment where change happens frequently.
  • Ability to forge, grow and maintain positive relationships.

  • Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Sense of urgency and strong commitment to achieving goals.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a positive attitude.
  • Residency, or a valid work permit which would allow you to work for Bird Construction or one of our wholly owned subsidiaries.
  • If you are selected for a role with client specific requirements, you may be required to successfully complete a pre‑employment Medical and/or Alcohol & Drug testing.
