The role would suit a motivated professional with 8-15 years' post-graduate experience, strong design capability, and a desire to work on complex, high-profile transportation schemes focusing on multi-million pound design and build schemes.
The Role
You will work on projects such as:
Highways and major roads
Bridges and structures
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)
Active travel (cycleways and pedestrian schemes)
Public transport infrastructure
Projects span the full asset lifecycle, from early feasibility and modelling through detailed design, construction support, and long-term asset management.
Senior Highway Engineer Responsibilities
Lead and contribute to the design of highways and transportation schemes
Prepare detailed design drawings, specifications and technical reports
Ensure compliance with UK and Irish design standards
Support project delivery to programme and budget
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical excellence
Senior Highway Engineer Essential Requirements
Honours degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
8-15 years' post-graduate experience within civil engineering
Minimum 5 years' experience in transportation/highways design
Chartered Engineer status (or working towards chartership)
Strong knowledge of relevant standards (e.g. DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20, MCHW)
Experience preparing works contract documentation and specifications
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
High attention to detail and commitment to quality
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced consultancy environment
Strong problem-solving skills and professional judgement
Fluent or highly proficient in written and spoken English Senior Highway Engineer
Desirable Experience
3D road design software such as Civil 3D, Open Roads or MX
Familiarity with TII and NTA project management guidelines
Experience on large-scale public infrastructure or transport programmes
