Bank Lifeguard

This post is based in the therapeutic hydrotherapy pool working as a lifeguard, providing lifeguard services for all users of the pool maintaining safe and effective running of the hydrotherapy pool service including providing constant supervision of all users of the therapeutic pool whilst in the hydrotherapy pool building during use of the pool, use of the shower facilities and whilst using the changing cubicles and changing rooms.

The post holder will maintain safety in the therapeutic pool environment reacting immediately to accidents or incidents, enacting pool rescue or emergency evacuation from the pool or providing assistance poolside or in any areas of the building. The post holder will also maintain compliance with cleanliness standards for the Hydrotherapy pool and undertake cleaning duties as this role requires.

The Trust will notify bank members when a suitable assignment arises, and members will be able to choose whether or not to accept it. Main

duties of the job
  • To ensure health and safety of all pool users, their carers/relatives and RJAH staff at all times.
  • To provide constant supervision to all users of the hydrotherapy pool in all areas of the pool building.
  • To recognise and lead on management of an emergency situation including undertaking an emergency evacuation or rescue from the therapeutic pool, as per the emergency evacuation plan.
  • To manage medical emergencies in the pool building including administering effective first aid or basic life support if required as per the emergency action plan.
  • To monitor pool user behaviour and ensure compliance with expected conduct/behaviour.
  • To obtain and maintain recognised lifeguarding qualifications up to date and attend regular training updates locally.
  • To undertake cleaning tasks as outlined in the pool operating procedures for the lifeguard role.
  • To report any equipment issues or incidents/malfunctions via the required process immediately including liaising with Estates department.
  • To report any infection prevention control issues immediately as per the operating procedures.
  • To comply with professional conduct.
  • To record attendance of pool users via the required system.

Physical Skills and Effort

The role requires physical effort with assisting with the pool hoist in and out of the pool, assisting patients in submersible hydrotherapy pool chairs or shower chairs, moving large changing plinths, carrying laundry bags of towels, hosing down flooring or equipment, cleaning pool equipment, mopping poolside flooring to reduce standing water, using machines to remove water from the flooring. This role includes long periods of standing or sitting.

The role can also include long periods of sustained concentration to ensure safety of all pool users.

  • Working conditions

The therapeutic hydrotherapy pool has an air temperature of between 28-32 degrees, the water temperature is between 30-35 degrees. The working environment can be consistently hot to work in. The nature of the pool setting has inherent risks of a slippery floor and people moving around the environment with slippery wet surfaces.
