We have an exciting opportunity for a part-time experienced theatre nurse (NMC Registered Nurse with an accredited anaesthetic qualification) or HCPC Registered Operating Department Practitioner.

The vacancy is available at our world‑leading specialist hospital, with rotational opportunities across anaesthetics, scrub and recovery.

Our theatre practitioners provide high‑quality care within a friendly and supportive multi‑disciplinary environment.

Please note we are unable to support applicants who require support to undertake OSCE.

Main duties of the job

The Theatre Unit at RJAH comprises 13 theatres alongside a Recovery unit, a HDU and an on‑site TSSU. We cover a wide spectrum of primarily elective orthopaedic surgery including, but not exclusively, revision & primary arthroplasty, upper limb, lower limb, sports injuries, spines, tumour and paediatrics.

Job responsibilities

• Ensure safe, quality care is provided for patients within the unit in line with Trust and unit policy.

• Manage the team as a team leader and participate as an active member of the scrub and circulating team in a designated highly specialist area without supervision where appropriate.

• Demonstrate a high level of communication and relationship skills, promoting effective liaison throughout the unit team and with the wider multidisciplinary team.

• Support the coordinator in the efficient management of the unit, including liaising with Recovery about list amendments or changes.

• Organise multidisciplinary staff allocation to your control on a daily basis.

• Ensure your theatre list runs smoothly and safely; this involves extensive cooperation and communication with the whole multidisciplinary team.

• Ensure health and safety of all staff, patients and visitors, reporting incidents, accidents or near misses to the coordinator as team leader.

• Maintain and document the safe use of all equipment, ensuring economic use of supplies.

• Adhere to all Trust and unit policies and procedures and attend mandatory annual training (e.g. Fire, Manual Handling, CPR).

• Have an understanding of risk management.

• Enhance patient care by effective assessment of patient needs, making complex decisions regarding surgical emergencies and coordinating specialist surgery out of hours.

• Deliver and continually review personal patient programmes of care.

• Provide sensitive communication with distressed or anxious patients and relatives.

• Manage repair, maintenance and safe use of equipment, ensuring proper provision of prosthesis components pre‑operatively, peri‑operatively and post‑operatively.

• Liaise with clinical specialists regarding individual patient care and evaluate surgical requirements.

• Ensure compliance with Nursing & Midwifery Council, Healthcare Professions Council and Continuing Professional Development requirements.

• Mentor and precept newly qualified staff within the area.

• Ensure Trust policies and procedures are followed and updated where necessary.

• Act as a role model and resource for junior staff.

• Manage ordering, storage, dispensing and recording of drugs in accordance with Trust policy.

• Retrieve patient information from Trust information technology systems including EPR, PAS Theatre Management System, TIMS, TIS and Fingerprint.

• Participate in audits and implement service improvements; undertake clinical trials as appropriate.

• Control and manage resources appropriately at all times.

• Act as a link nurse, maintaining a learning environment for colleagues.

• Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team and other Trust departments.

• Keep your line manager informed of any changes affecting safe, high‑quality patient care and act in their absence.

• Keep abreast of current and future nursing and peri‑operative trends.

• Promote an environment of openness and support for all staff, patients and visitors.

• Perform any other duties within accepted levels of accountability as assigned by your line manager.
