Lifeguard – Job Description

Under the direction and supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of all members and guests in and around the aquatic facilities. The Lifeguard maintains constant surveillance of pool areas, enforces all safety rules and policies, and responds quickly and effectively to emergency situations. This position plays a critical role in promoting water safety, preventing accidents, and creating a welcoming and safe environment for all YMCA members.

• Monitor swimmers, recognize potential hazards, and proactively prevent unsafe behavior.
• Perform water rescues, administer first aid, CPR, AED, and emergency oxygen as needed.
• Complete all required incident and accident reports accurately and in a timely manner.
• Maintain a clean and organized pool deck and inspect equipment for safety.
• Report maintenance concerns immediately.
• Provide excellent customer service, positively engage with members and guests, and support swim instructors and aquatic programs.

• Minimum age 15 or meet state requirements.
• Current lifeguard certification and CPR/AED and First Aid certifications (or obtain upon hire).
• Strong swimming skills and the ability to remain alert, focused, and calm under pressure.
• Ability to work flexible hours including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Comfortable working in a warm, humid pool environment.
