Job Duties:

Under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant, the UW Oshkosh Police Officer serves a community of around 11,000 students and employees; covering 58 buildings on 184 acres along the Fox River in the heart of Oshkosh. UW Oshkosh Police Officers are sworn law enforcement professionals (State of Wisconsin LESB certified) who exercise full statutory arrest authority while carrying out the Department’s mission: to serve our community by building relationships, reducing fear, and solving problems – treating every person with the fairness and respect we would want for ourselves, and approaching every interaction as an opportunity to make a positive difference.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide a full range of law enforcement services including enforcing laws, investigating complaints, maintaining order, assisting people, identifying criminal activity, and apprehending offenders when necessary.

  • Actively engage with students, employees, and visitors to build relationships that foster trust and develop a shared responsibility for campus safety.

  • Partner with the community to identify the root causes of concerns and work toward sustainable solutions that enhance safety and wellbeing.

  • Analyze data and trends to support crime prevention efforts.

  • Conduct complex investigations, collect and process evidence, prepare thorough written reports, and testify in proceedings when required.

  • Maintain proficiency in the safe use of police equipment, defensive and arrest tactics, and firearms in compliance with state law and department policy.

  • Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies, University departments, mental health providers, and human service agencies to provide coordinated responses.

  • Support special details such as crowd management, special event security, and dignitary protection.

Specialized Opportunities
Officers may be selected for specialized roles such as Police Training Officer (PTO), Evidence Technician or Custodian, K9 Handler, Bicycle Patrol Officer, or Drone Team member. They may also be eligible to serve on multi-jurisdictional teams including the Winnebago County SWAT Team, Dive Team, or Accident Reconstruction Team.

Work Schedule
Currently, Officers are working 12-hour shifts with every other weekend being three (3) days off.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case information
  • Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws
  • Provides personal safety and crime prevention education to institutional community
  • Provides protection of life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order and provides emergency aid to the institutional community
  • Engages in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others
