ROLE OVERVIEW

The Clinical Nurse Specialist will provide leadership and clinical expertise to support excellence in patient care by planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs to enhance clinical proficiency, quality improvement and team development within the Emergency Department (ED) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This role reports to the Patient Care Manager, ED and collaborates with the Emergency and Critical Care services leadership for department specific and clinical initiative activities.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist promotes excellence within the ED/ICU through mentoring and coaching staff; develops, provides, and evaluates educational programs including orientation, skill certification, continuing education and professional development. The Clinical Nurse Specialist acts as a consultant to the team regarding nursing practice issues and functions as a role model and resource. This role acts as a consultant to the Clinical Services Director(s) and Manager(s) drawing upon advanced knowledge of practice standards in emergency and critical care.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist will lead and/or participate in specific projects and/or functions, which support exemplary clinical practice and quality of care within the team. (e.g. policy and procedure development, quality of care reviews, learning plans). The successful incumbent will have knowledge of the pay for performance (P4R) metrics for the ED.

Areas of responsibility may change according to the needs of the Emergency and Critical Care Services programs. This role interacts with multiple health disciplines and collaborates with other Clinical Educators and Professional Practice Leads across the organization for corporate orientation and corporate initiatives.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist demonstrates responsibility and accountability for promoting a work environment that exemplifies respect, interprofessional and ethical practice, and professional decision making.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing
  • Master’s degree in nursing or education
  • Current ACLS and BLS
  • Canadian Emergency Nursing Certificate (ENC) or completion within 6 months
  • Current PALS and TNCC
  • Current CTAS certification
  • Emergency Nursing or Critical Care Certificate
  • Minimum five (5) years recent clinical experience in an Emergency Department with exemplary clinical practice
  • Level 3 ICU experience is strongly preferred
  • Previous experience in clinical education in Emergency or Critical care preferred
  • Expertise with the critically ill adult and child population
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills related to enabling evidence-based nursing practice, interprofessional and ethical practice, and person-centered care
  • Experience leading quality improvement initiatives
