Shift Supervisor – Durham York
SummaryThe Shift Supervisor coordinates and oversees the shift activities of the Operations Department at the Durham York Energy Facility (registered 1st Class Power Plant). Reporting to the Assistant Chief Engineer, this role involves supervising and coordinating operations maintenance activities either personally or through subordinates. This role is critical to maintaining plant reliability, safety, and environmental compliance. It offers a strong career pathway into roles such as Operations Manager, Facilities Manager, Maintenance Manager, or Mechanical Supervisor.
SupervisoryResponsibilities
- Lead, coach, and support the Control Room Operators, Auxiliary Operators, Crane Operators, and Utility Operators to safely and efficiently operate a registered 1st Class Power Plant (waste to energy power plant).
- Set clear expectations, communicate priorities, and make sure every team member understands their role in meeting production and environmental goals.
- Promote open communication – hold daily job discussions, encourage input from operators, and ensure feedback is given in a positive and constructive way.
- Conduct regular field job observations to verify safe work practices, compliance with procedures, and opportunities for coaching or improvement.
- Ensure all work is completed safely, accurately documented, and in compliance with environmental and company standards.
- Handle scheduling, performance discussion, training, and discipline in a fair and consistent manner that builds trust and accountability.
- Support employee development through mentorship, training, and recognition of strong performance.
- Demonstrate the ability to manage and lead effectively within a unionized environment, fostering collaboration and mutual respect.
- Safety Leadership:
Set the tone for safety every day. Lead by example, hold pre-job briefings, verify permits, and ensure the team follows Life Critical Rule requirements. Stop any unsafe act immediately and use it as a learning opportunity. - Environmental Responsibility:
Ensure compliance with all environmental policies, CEMS monitoring, and permit limits. Promote awareness of how operations affect emissions, ash handling, and waste streams. Report and help resolve environmental incidents quickly and accurately. - Technical Oversight:
Maintain a strong understanding of plant systems — boilers, turbines, air pollution control, feedwater systems, and balance of plant. Support operators in troubleshooting, diagnosing, and responding to process upsets or alarms. - Documentation and Reporting:
Ensure all shift logs, reports, rounds sheets, and operational records are accurate, complete, and submitted on time. Review data for trends that may indicate process inefficiencies or potential equipment issues. - Communication and Coordination:
Work closely with Maintenance, Environmental, and Engineering teams to plan and execute work safely and efficiently. Ensure smooth shift handovers with clear, detailed communication. - Job Discussions and Observations:
