Description

Position: Nursing Assistant Certified (Part Time-Permanent)

Location: Washington Soldiers Home

Schedule: Friday through Sunday, 10:00 pm to 6:30 am.

Facilities: 24/7 differential; eligible for "Supplement Basic Shift Premium" (additional $1.00 per hour of supplemental basic shift premium for each hour of basic shift premium). This shift premium does not apply to overtime hours and expires on June 29, 2027.

Pay: Position posted within Step L pay range. Step M is not published as it is the longevity step under state HR compensation rules.

About the Department

The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) serves nearly 500,000 veterans and their families. We provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care at four State Veterans Homes in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla.

Duties
  • Assist residents with positioning, transferring, and ambulation; ensure a safe and secure work environment, including preventative infection control methods.
  • Respond to call lights, internal and external emergencies, and facility codes.
  • Record care, vital signs, and observations.
  • Assist residents with personal clothing, belongings, and equipment; bathing, dressing, grooming, hygiene, etc.
  • Assist with therapies and treatment under the direction of licensed personnel; motion exercises as needed.
  • Accurately obtain and record vital signs and other resident data; document intake/output records.
  • Perform basic nursing procedures such as applying anti‑embolism stockings, applying creams or lotions, collecting specimens, etc.

Required Qualifications
  • Current and valid Washington State Nursing Assistant Certification.
  • Current active status on OBRA (Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) check.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English for medical charts.
  • Ability to perform data entry.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to provide a positive living environment for residents, meet psychosocial needs, follow written and verbal directions, and document and report observed changes in patient condition and behavior.
  • High School graduation.

AND

  • Six months of Nursing Assistant experience.

OR

  • Equivalent education/experience.
Preferred/Desired
  • Accurate methods and practices to assist residents with activities of daily care, personal hygiene, sanitation methods, record keeping, reporting changes, infection control procedures, and residents' rights.
Special Requirements
  • Must pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check every two (2) years per WDVA Policy 615.000.
  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening per DVA policy 670.000.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act standards.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. and reach a minimum of 36″ using proper technique; must be able to push or pull with sufficient strength and walk, sit, and bend unrestricted during the workday.
  • Must maintain a valid practical nursing license from the Washington State Department of Health.
  • Must maintain regular and reliable attendance and be willing to work as needed.
  • Must successfully complete all mandatory training within mandated time frames.
  • Must become familiar with and comply with all DVA policies, procedures, and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
  • Must sign the confidentiality statement for all employees.
  • Position requiring travel must have a valid unrestricted driver’s license and liability insurance if driving a private vehicle on state business.
  • Candidates must possess work authorization that does not require employer sponsorship for a visa then or now.
