Position: Mechanic I

Summary/objective

The Mechanic I is an experienced diesel and heavy equipment mechanic who provides maintenance for the company's fleet. Under supervision from the Equipment Shop Manager, the primary duties of the Mechanic I include, but are not limited to, performing predictive and preventive repair, overhaul, and maintenance of automotive vehicles, construction-type, mobile, earth‑moving, and load‑lifting equipment, and various heavy‑duty, portable, and stationary engines.

This position requires frequent travel to project sites with overnight stays.

Essential functions
  • Experience with diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Familiar with diagnostic software (Cummings Insite, Bendix Acom, Cat ET).
  • Experience with and understanding of hydraulics (pumps, cylinders, valves). Perform highly technical work on hydraulic systems, fabrication projects, and rebuilding assignments.
  • Familiar with DEF and DPF systems.
  • Experienced with Air Brake Systems and able to make repairs.
  • Must be able to perform 90‑day BIT inspections and complete all required forms.
  • Drivetrain experience.
  • Auto electrical diagnostics.
  • Performs diagnostics of electronically controlled systems such as engines, fuel injection and transmission systems.
  • Tire mounting, tire repairs.
  • Welding and fabrication skills a plus.
  • Services vehicles and equipment with fuel, oil, grease, water and hydraulic fluids; assures proper fluid levels; lubricates gearboxes and chassis such as suspension, steering, driveline; drains and refills crankcases; replaces fuses; assures proper tire rotation and air levels and fills as needed.
  • Schedule and set priorities for maintenance and repair work on Company equipment.
  • Make an initial inspection of equipment to be repaired and diagnose defects.
  • Generate work orders and evaluate repair work on its completion.
  • Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary parts such as valves, pistons, main bearing assemblies, cooling, fuel and exhaust components and ignition systems.
  • Order necessary parts, develop estimates and determine which supplier can meet needs.
  • Coordinate maintenance and repairs with other Company departments and divisions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions; communicate with supervisors, co‑workers and the public effectively.
  • Able to comply with all safety policies and procedures and OSHA regulations.
  • Able to comply with all company policies and procedures.
  • Must have a strong work ethic.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
  • Methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of municipal equipment.
  • Operating principles of gasoline, diesel, and alternative fueled engines.
  • Operating principles of light and heavy‑duty vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work.
  • Electronic control systems typically found on modern automotive equipment.
Ability to:
  • Locate, correct, and adjust defects in light and heavy duty vehicular and mechanical equipment.
  • Assist with the maintenance schedule and set priorities for repairs and preventive maintenance to be accomplished.
  • Effectively communicate mechanical issues and required repairs.
  • Adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
  • Order and identify parts necessary for repairs.
  • Operate engine and electrical diagnostic equipment, ARC and gas welders, soldering gun, air jacks, forklift, engine hoists, grinders, steam cleaner, high‑pressure washer, meters, gauges, hydraulic press, drill press, and a variety of power and hand tools to repair.
  • Read and interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Detect and report defective materials or questionable conditions.
  • Ensure shop areas are maintained in a clean and orderly condition, hazardous materials are stored, used and disposed of properly, and cares for tools and equipment.
  • Compently and safely operate and care for tools used in vehicle and mechanical equipment repair work.
