Job Description:

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Director provides strategic leadership, oversight, and continuous improvement of the organization’s environmental, health, safety, and emergency preparedness programs. This position plays a critical role in meeting federal, state, and county regulatory requirements. The successful candidate has strong environmental affairs and/or safety experience with a proven record for teamwork and continuous improvement. This can be located in San Jose, CA or Torrance, CA.

ESSENTIAL

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS programs, procedures, and policies and lead the Corporate Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) team in development of goals providing strategic leadership and technical resources to business units.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, CEQA/NEPA, NPDES, hazardous waste, air/water quality, and safety regulations.
  • Lead risk assessments, hazard analyses, and mitigation planning.
  • Oversee incident investigations, root-cause analyses, and corrective action development.
  • Manage required EHS training programs.
  • Direct internal/external EHS audits and inspections.
  • Maintain EHS performance metrics, dashboards, and regulatory reporting.
  • Oversee waste characterization, hazardous waste disposal, air emissions compliance, stormwater/non-stormwater permits.
  • Collaborate with Facilities, Engineering, Operations, Water Quality, Legal, and other teams.
  • Manage EHS staff and provide leadership, coaching, and development.
  • Support emergency response and after-hours readiness.
  • Prepares and reviews Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) of new properties.
  • Maintains positive and effective working relationships with local, state, and federal environmental and safety regulatory agencies, managing permits, regulatory inspections, incident reporting, and all regulatory requirements
  • Support staff in reviews process for capital project designs and planning to mitigate or avoid environmental and safety risk.
  • Reviews and analyzes federal, state, and local laws and regulations, implementing policies or programs to ensure company-wide compliance and participate in the regulation development process.
  • Participates in external industry organizations related to the water and wastewater sector's environmental, health and safety.
  • Assesses new developments in the health, safety, and environmental fields that may have application to the Company’s operations
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or related field or relevant experience.
  • Minimum five years of EHS management experience.
  • Experience in utility, industrial, or related sectors.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Safety Trainer Specialist Certification through the NASP must be acquired within one year of hire
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and EHS systems.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and state regulations.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Skilled in risk assessment, incident investigation, and safety and environmental auditing.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project-management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of employees and management
  • Ability to think clearly and react appropriately in emergency situations
  • Ability to prepare, manage and analyze data
  • Demonstrated commitment to outstanding customer service
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Good problem-solving and trouble shooting skills

Salary Range: $162,300 - $301,300
