Overview

This classification is scheduled to receive a 5% COLA effective July 2026.

This recruitment will be limited to the first 50 applicants.

The current vacancies are in the Butte County Behavioral Health Department. The eligibility list created from this recruitment may be used to fill any current or future vacancies in any Butte County Department.

Candidates selected for this position would be working with diverse community members in a meaningful support role. Health Services Assistants are often the first point of contact people have on some of their most challenging days. If hired for one of these positions, you would act as a hub of information for the public, staff, and the people we serve. This role is frequently challenging and fast-paced and is an important part of what allows Behavioral Health to help people across Butte County.

This recruitment is for Level I and Level II. The salary ranges are:

  • Health Services Assistant I: $1,640.00 - $2,196.80 biweekly ($20.50 - $27.46 per hour)
  • Health Services Assistant II: $1,723.20 - $2,308.80 biweekly ($21.54 - $28.86 per hour)

The eligibility list created from this recruitment may be used to fill regular or extra help vacancies. Extra Help means this may be a Part-Time or Non-Permanent position. Hours may vary and depend on department needs. For terms and conditions concerning Extra Help with Butte County, see Section 6.13c of the Butte County Personnel Rules.

Definition

Under immediate (Health Services Assistant I) or general (Health Services Assistant II) supervision, performs a variety of medical office, medical records, and/or program support activities for County clinics and behavioral or public health programs, which may include word processing, data entry and organization, telephone and counter reception, patient scheduling and intake, and maintaining, processing, and filing applications and medical records; creates routine correspondence and/or reports;

provides information and assistance to staff and the general public; and performs related duties as assigned.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives immediate (Health Services Assistant I) or general (Health Services Assistant II) supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

Class Characteristics

Health Services Assistant I:
This is the entry-level classification in the Health Services Assistant series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform clerical duties in support of medical records, clinic, or program operations. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and complex; close supervision and frequent review of work lessen as an incumbent demonstrates skill to perform the work independently. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the Health Services Assistant II but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.

Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.
