Job Summary

The Supervisor, Emergency Department is responsible for supervising and coordinating nursing care within the Emergency Department, ensuring optimal patient flow, quality care, and adherence to policies and procedures. This role serves as a clinical resource, providing professional leadership and operational coordination to support the department’s mission and vision. The Supervisor works collaboratively with staff and leadership to enhance patient outcomes, staff engagement, and operational efficiency.

Essential

Functions
  • Supervises and evaluates nursing care delivery in the Emergency Department, ensuring adherence to the nursing process, medical care plans, and departmental policies.
  • Monitors patient flow, turnaround times, and staff performance to identify and implement process improvements that reduce delays and enhance care delivery.
  • Performs regular rounding on patients and staff in the Emergency Department to address concerns, provide support, and ensure high standards of care.
  • Identifies and addresses staffing needs for oncoming shifts, taking proactive steps to secure adequate coverage and maintain continuity of care.
  • Acts as a clinical resource for staff, providing guidance and support for complex patient care situations.
  • Reports problems or issues encountered during the shift to the appropriate Manager, Director, or Administrator on Call in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Prioritizes data collection and documentation activities based on patient condition and departmental priorities, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
Leadership Responsibilities
  • Supervision and Staff Management
    • Supervises, trains and oversees departmental staff.
    • Schedules employees to ensure effective use of resources. Consults with Manager or Director on staffing issues.
    • Assists with and contributes to performance evaluations and goal setting.
  • Strategic Planning and Financial Oversight
    • Assists in managing departmental budget ensuring cost‑effective operations while maintaining high quality service.
    • Monitors expenditures, ensuring cost‑effective delivery of services.
    • May contribute to evaluation and implementation of new technologies to enhance operational efficiency.
    • May contribute to development of departmental policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance
    • Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies.
    • May participate in audits, inspections and accreditation processes as applicable.
    • Follows established quality control practices to ensure accuracy, consistency and safety.
  • Collaboration and Communication
    • Works closely with leadership teams to coordinate and improve service delivery.
    • Stays up-to-date with industry advancements, new technologies, and regulatory changes.
  • Staff Responsibilities
    • May work in a staff role, when required. Ensures that duties and responsibilities are fulfilled while meeting all competencies established for that job.
Qualifications
  • Associate Degree or higher preferred
  • 1‑2 years of related experience in the profession required
  • 1‑2 years of previous leadership experience preferred
