Job Summary
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the direct driver management and supervision of a midsize driver count, ensuring safe and timely freight movement, load assignment, and best‑in‑class customer service. The Transportation Manager must comply with DOT regulations, manage driver compliance and company regulations, and coordinate with internal and external contacts to plan, route, monitor, and deliver freight. Flexible scheduling across day, night, and weekend shifts is required to maintain operational coverage.
Job DescriptionKey Responsibilities
- Build and maintain positive professional relationships with drivers and safety staff to minimize turnover and maximize productivity.
- Fill in for absent personnel and engage in special projects to optimize fleet operations and profitability.
- Provide training and orientation for drivers and employees, including internal and third‑party systems.
- Analyze fleet operations and profitability, recommend continuous improvement, set key performance indicators, and present customer‑specific reporting and financial analysis.
- Manage inventory, assets, customer pools, and driver assignments to balance equipment across the market.
- Perform administrative duties such as payroll, driver counseling, accident reviews, documentation, pay issue resolution, invoicing, and operational or financial reporting.
- Oversee yard operations, inspect equipment, coordinate maintenance, and ensure preventive maintenance and safety issues are addressed.
- Resolve service issues with drivers, customers, and company personnel, handling routing, mechanical problems, accessorial pay, and other operational challenges.
- Maintain a safety culture through daily driver safety messages, monthly briefings, quarterly training, annual reviews, and enforcement of DOT compliance and company safety requirements.
- Assign loads, plan routes, monitor freight movement, and manage exceptions and driver ETA adjustments based on pickup, delivery schedules, and road conditions.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED and 2‑3 years of experience in transportation/logistics, business administration, account management, or equivalent military experience.
- Ability to work across multiple shifts, including nights and/or weekends as needed.
- Strong professional communication skills, both internal and external.
- Proven experience establishing and maintaining healthy working relationships.
- Experience fostering strong customer relationships through commitment delivery, open communication, and continuous improvement.
- Accurate information processing and decision making based on informed judgment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and adapt to dynamic work environments.
- Experience holding people accountable and conducting difficult conversations.
- Ability to perform under stressful, high‑pressure conditions.
- Willingness to travel to account and customer locations as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Transportation/Logistics, Supply Chain, or related field plus 1‑2 years of experience in transportation/logistics, business administration, account management, or equivalent military experience.
Factors affecting starting pay include skills, education, experience, geography, and other qualifications. This position may be eligible for annual bonuses and incentives based on profitability or volume, in accordance with the Company’s plans.
