Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and dependable Utility Pipe Layer/Equipment Operator to join our specialty construction team. In this role, you will install, repair, and maintain underground piping systems, including water, sewer, and storm drainage. The position also includes restoration work such as concrete, asphalt, and landscape/sod restoration. The ideal candidate is physically fit, detail-oriented, and committed to safety and quality workmanship.
You should be able to place, seal, and align pipes efficiently without slowing down the construction crew. This role may involve working in varied environments, including construction sites, urban areas, and industrial zones.
What You'll Do
- Install and align underground utility pipes (water, sewer, storm drain) according to blueprints and specifications
- Excavate trenches using hand tools or heavy equipment
- Grade and level trench bases to ensure proper pipe placement
- Cut, fit, and join pipe sections (weld, glue, or otherwise)
- Inspect and test installed systems for leaks and proper function
- Collaborate with equipment operators, foremen, and other crew members
- Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean worksite
- Read and interpret construction plans and utility maps
- Provide ground support to lead Foreman and equipment operators
- Operate hand tools and small equipment as needed
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the construction team and company objectives
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- 1-2 years of experience in pipe laying or underground utility work
- Familiarity with PVC, ductile iron, concrete, corrugated metal, and HDPE pipe materials
- Ability to operate hand tools (handsaws, sawzalls, concrete saws, tampers, pumps, etc.)
- Ability to work around trenching and excavation equipment
- Strong understanding of OSHA safety standards
- Physical ability to lift heavy materials and work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Clear communication skills and ability to follow crew leader directions
- Punctual, reliable, and committed to the job
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Experience driving company vehicles or operating construction equipment
- Experience with laser levels and grade checking
- Basic knowledge of soil compaction and back filling techniques
