Job Summary:

The Deckhand is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and operation of the MJ Verrochi and Flexi float jack-up barge, including assisting with the smooth operation of a sheet pile installation spread. The Deckhand reports directly to the supervisor of this work spread and supports marine spread operations, tying up ropes, lashing barges, and assisting with material movement. This position is vital to the operation and maintenance of our sheet pile installation spread.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • First Aid/CPR certification



Experience:

  • 1+ years marine experience preferred
  • Boat operations experience preferred
  • Barge experience preferred



Skills:

  • Clear and concise radio communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to learn safe crew and deckhand duties
  • Knowledge of safe and efficient use of tools and equipment such as power and hand tools, tugboats
  • Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions; effective communication with management
  • Act as signal person for equipment operators; assist in loading, unloading, and securing equipment and materials

Responsibilities:

  • Inspect barges for damage and leaks, including confined space entry when necessary
  • Inspect lines and ropes for tears
  • Use lines, wires, ratchets, and stationary winches for towing operations in all weather conditions
  • Operate tools and equipment like shackles, chain straps, wires/cables
  • Perform daily and periodic maintenance such as cleaning, painting, chipping, rigging transfers, and vessel upkeep
  • Report vessel conditions and hazards to the mate or pilot and take preventative actions

Physical Demands/Working Environment:

  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions and on marine vessels
  • Operate around heavy equipment and machinery safely
  • Lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment (minimum 20 lbs.)
  • Climb ladders and work in extreme temperatures
  • Frequent exposure to noise from machinery
  • Perform other duties as assigned
