Work Schedule:
Monday to Friday shifts 7:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.; occasional weekend and evening availability required
- Operate cash register tabulating transactions, accepting payments, giving change, bagging purchases and processing employee or student discounts as appropriate. Accurately and efficiently complete all sales transactions and maintain proper cash and media accountabilities at POS registers.
- Start up and shut down register, troubleshoot, count down register, and perform cashier audits.
- Balance the cash drawer including checks and credit card receipts and student charge slips.
- Observe safe money handling procedures and secure transaction practices when accepting cash payment, making change, accepting checks and credit card payments, and processing refunds/buybacks. Include maintaining cashier integrity to safeguard register and drawer deposits.
- Straighten merchandise, stock shelves, price merchandise and may assist in setting up displays and signs.
- Take inventory as needed and may have responsibility for ordering general merchandise items (snacks, beverages, newspapers, magazines, etc.).
- Provide customer service/sales functions for special events (including but not limited to author signings, graduation and athletic events).
- In partnership with manager, monitor and coordinate online orders and fulfillment by processing online orders, pulling books and merchandise, preparing orders for pick‑up or shipment, and communicating order status to customers.
- May be cross‑trained and expected to fill in for other employees during absences, breaks, lunches, and high‑volume periods; assist manager with textbook management system software; assist manager on processing online orders; assist manager on purchasing general merchandise; assist in training new associates and serve as subject matter expert.
- Assist the Bookstore Accountant Specialist in maintaining internal controls of cash handling procedures to ensure minimum exposure to error or misappropriation.
- Assist in opening and closing of the store as needed.
- May be required to mop, vacuum, clean shelves and take out trash.
- Process passport applications according to government guidelines.
- Complete notary certifications, ensuring all legal requirements are met.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Experience handling money and processing commercial sales transactions.
- Knowledge of financial operations of an educational institution.
- Ability to accurately and efficiently process cash and credit card sales transactions.
- Knowledge of money handling procedures to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
- Ability to follow college policies and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.
- Skill in public relations.
- Skill in cash register operation, basic computer applications, and basic accounting procedures.
- Ability to travel between campuses, as needed.
This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. The employee will routinely operate standard office equipment including but not limited to computers, keyboards, mouse, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
Typical physical competencies include frequently remaining stationary, moving, reaching, positioning self, and occasionally ascending/descending, lifting/moving objects weighing between 5–15 pounds. Cognitive abilities include frequently using discretion, judgment, reasoning, memory, learning, maintaining confidentiality, comprehension, problem solving, and decision-making.
