Job Description

Ensures compliance with Animal Services ordinances and responds to complaints, safeguarding the safety and welfare of citizens and animals. Works under the direction of the Senior Animal Services Officer and is evaluated by observation, written reports, and results. Work may include irregular hours, on‑call status, on‑site travel to remote areas, exposure to adverse weather, fumes from euthanasia, violent or sick animals, and the handling of potentially dangerous animals and infectious materials.

Requires frequent moderate lifting of 25–50 pounds and occasional lifting of >50 pounds.

Representative Duties / Assignments
  • Enforce all applicable animal services ordinances, codes, laws, resolutions, and regulations; initiate corrective actions, issue citations or warning notices as appropriate.
  • Respond to calls regarding animal bites, potential cruelty, stray or nuisance animals, barking dogs, sick or injured animals, behavior problems, or animal control law violations.
  • Provide information, assistance, and education to the public; present to schools, civic groups, and community organizations.
  • Mediates and resolves citizen disputes concerning animal incidents.
  • Conduct investigations, determine court action, assist in preparing court cases, and participate in court activities.
  • Patrol roads, pick up stray animals, assist animals in problem situations, capture domestic or wildlife, set and monitor traps, load/unload cages, transport animals, relocate wildlife, and remove dead animals from roadways.
  • Handle, lift, and restrain animals as appropriate; check for rabies tags, owner , disease signs; quarantine exposed animals; identify breeds and behavior.
  • Perform kennel duties: feedings, waterings, cleaning, disinfecting, medical treatments, laboratory work, bathing, and all aspects of animal care.
  • Monitor inventory of equipment, tools, and supplies to ensure availability for kennel activities.
  • Perform euthanasia, incineration, and prepare deceased animals for examination.
  • Operate machinery, equipment, and tools associated with Animal Services, including vehicles, restraint equipment, traps, nets, and radio communication.
  • Prepare, complete, and manage forms, reports, correspondence, court records, and policies; review, forward, or retain as appropriate.
  • Communicate with supervisors, employees, other departments, law enforcement, veterinarians, community organizations, and citizens to coordinate work activities, review status, and resolve problems.
  • Maintain current knowledge of laws, regulations, and industry advances; stay informed of new procedures and trends.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; three (3) years of public‑service or enforcement experience; basic animal care knowledge; clear oral and written communication skills; ability to follow procedures. Must maintain a home telephone number and possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Within one year of hire:

  • Complete a mandatory forty (40)‑hour Animal Control course as required by Florida State Statute.
  • Complete Orange County Animal Services Officer training course.
  • Complete a sixteen (16)‑hour Chemical Capture course.
  • Obtain State of Florida Incinerator Certification, or complete training and obtain certification within one year.
  • Complete a sixteen (16)‑hour Euthanasia Certification course.
Schedule

Tuesday through Saturday, 3:00 pm–11:30 pm (holidays included).
