The Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) provides high‑level clinical care to surgical and oncologic patients across inpatient and perioperative settings. The role requires a clinician who is comfortable practicing with a high degree of independent clinical assessment and decision making, while still functioning with a collaborative framework that includes residents, attending physicians and the broader interdisciplinary team. The APP evaluates pre‑ and post‑operative patients, identifies clinical deterioration, initiates escalation of care, performs procedures within credentialed scope, and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes, throughput, and continuity of care.

Clinical Care

• Perform comprehensive assessments of fresh post‑operative patients in PACU or upon transfer to inpatient units.
• Evaluate for hemodynamic stability, respiratory adequacy, neurologic status, pain control, and early post‑operative complications.
• Conduct targeted assessments to identify clinical decline and initiate appropriate interventions.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests, develop treatment plans, and adjust therapies based on patient response.
• Manage a diverse population of surgical and oncologic patients, including symptom management with pre and post‑procedural care.

Independent Practice Within a Collaborative Model

• Demonstrate strong autonomous clinical judgment in assessing, diagnosing, and managing patients, particularly during off‑hours or when immediate physician presence is limited.
• Practice independently while maintaining alignment with attending physicians, residents, and established care pathways.
• Seek consultation appropriately and elevate concerns in accordance with institutional policies and team‑based care expectations.
• Support resident education and workflow by managing patient care needs that can be safely addressed at the APP level.

Escalation of Care & Transfers

• Determine need for escalation to higher‑acuity care, ED evaluation, or hospital transfer.
• Activate rapid response or consult specialty teams when indicated.
• Facilitate safe and efficient transfers with clear communication and documentation.
• Support throughput by reducing delays in care transitions and increasing provider touchpoints.

Procedural Responsibilities (as credentialed)

  • Central venous catheter placement
  • Chest tube insertion
  • Paracentesis, thoracentesis, or other advanced procedures
