Job Summary

The Registered Nurse, Diabetes Educator participates in assessing, planning, coordinating and implementing the education programs provided to patients diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus.

Responsibilities Essential Functions
  • Involved with the updating and revision of the Diabetes Education curriculum for patients and nursing staff.
  • Actively participates in community outreach programs.
  • Participates in community and corporate health fairs.
  • Facilitates diabetes support groups.
  • Serves on committees as required.
  • Takes weekend call as assigned.
  • Communicates patient needs to all members of the Diabetes Center Team.
  • Plans, develops and implements in‑service education for staff development.
  • Collaborates with medical staff and nursing staff for the ongoing management and education of diabetes patients.
  • Adheres to Orlando Health policies, procedures, guidelines, mission and vision statements and commitment to excellence.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Other Related Functions
  • Demonstrates knowledge of patient rights, legal issues and compliance with the standards of regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Practices efficient use of diabetes education materials, supplies and blood glucose monitors.
  • Practices safe and appropriate infection control techniques at all times.
  • Provides insulin pump training and initiation.
  • Participates in process improvement activities.
  • Participates in Critical Success Factor activities.
Qualifications Education/Training

Graduate from an approved school of nursing.

Licensure/Certification
  • Maintains current RN license in the State of Florida.
  • Certified Diabetes Educator by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (renewed every five years) within two years of hire. Team Members hired into this job prior to June 6, 2019 must obtain Certification by May 31, 2020.
  • Maintains current BLS/Health Care Provider Certification.
Experience

Three years of clinical experience required. Previous teaching and staff development skills/experience.
