Automation Engineering
You in This Role As a Manufacturing Software Engineer, you will design, build, and own the software
systems that power Unusual Machines’ production operations. You will develop a custom Manufacturing
Execution System (MES) and supporting applications that integrate equipment, operators, quality
systems, and ERP tools to deliver real-time visibility, control, and traceability on the facility floor.
This is a highly hands-on role for an engineer who thrives in fast-paced manufacturing environments and
enjoys working directly with operators, technicians, and engineers. You will operate at the intersection of
software development and manufacturing execution, rapidly deploying tools that directly impact
throughput, quality, and operational efficiency.
This role involves building systems from the ground up with no existing MES roadmap. You’ll define
how production data is captured, visualized, and acted upon, while continuously iterating based on real-
world facility feedback.
A Day in the Life
Designing and developing a custom MES tailored to our production workflows
Building internal web applications and dashboards for operators, technicians, supervisors, and
engineers
Spending time on the manufacturing floor to understand workflows, pain points, and data flows
Translating operational needs into technical requirements and rapidly implementing solutions
Developing intuitive, user-friendly interfaces that reduce errors and improve traceability
Integrating real-time data from equipment, test stations, barcode scanners, and production tools
Connecting MES applications with ERP, quality systems, inventory databases, and internal tools
Using automation tools (e.g., Zapier) to streamline workflows and enable low-code integrations
where appropriate
Deploying updates frequently, gathering user feedback, and iterating in short development cycles
Supporting production during active manufacturing and ensuring system reliability
Creating documentation for new features, workflows, and integrations
Collaborating closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, and Operations teams
What You’ll Do
Architect and build a Manufacturing Execution System from the ground up
Own internal manufacturing software applications from design through deployment and support
Develop dashboards and interfaces that provide real-time production visibility
Implement reliable data capture from production equipment and test infrastructure
Build and maintain integrations with ERP and quality management systems
Rapidly prototype, deploy, and refine software based on operator and stakeholder feedback
Ensure manufacturing systems support quality, traceability, and operational efficiency
Define and improve digital workflows across the facility
Contribute to continuous improvement of manufacturing processes through software
What You’ll Bring
Required:
Experience developing software within or closely alongside a manufacturing organization
Strong experience with modern web application frameworks, databases, and cloud deployment
Hands-on experience building dashboards, operator interfaces, and data-driven tools
Ability to work safely and confidently around production equipment and active manufacturing
lines
Experience gathering requirements directly from operators, engineers, and supervisors
Strong understanding of workflow mapping, data flows, and manufacturing operations
Experience integrating with ERP and QMS systems, including custom connectors
Familiarity with automation tools such as Zapier or similar platforms
Proven ability to iterate quickly, deploy improvements, and respond to user feedback
Strong communication skills and a self-directed, proactive mindset
Preferred:
Experience building or supporting MES or facility-floor software systems
Experience in high-mix, fast-scaling manufacturing environments
Prior work supporting production, test, or quality operations
What You’ll Gain
Ownership of manufacturing software systems that directly impact production performance
The opportunity to build an MES and facility software stack from scratch
Close collaboration with manufacturing leadership and operators
High visibility into facility operations and decision-making
