Starting salary: $67,728.13/yr - $70,437.12/yr with 4+ years of full-time law enforcement officer experience. The Orange County Sheriff's Office offers Academy Sponsorship Opportunities.

Signing allowances: $4,000 or $5,000 dependent on experience and certification (see Salary info for details).

Responsibilities

The incumbent is responsible for the protection of life, property and the enforcement of laws and regulations. This work requires the ability to effectively use computer systems and electronic equipment; involves an element of personal danger; and entails frequent contact with the public under routine and emergency conditions. The incumbent is required to engage in the pursuit, apprehension, and arrest of law violators or suspected law violators, observed or when assistance is requested from dispatch or other deputy sheriffs.

Minimum Requirements & Essential Functions
  • Must be Florida Certified or currently attending a Florida Law Enforcement Officer Academy.
  • Florida Certified (vested with authority to bear arms and make arrests): must have completed the Florida Law Enforcement Officer Certification or Equivalency of Training from a Florida law enforcement academy and a passing score on the certification exam.
  • Currently Attending an Academy: must be currently attending a Florida law enforcement officer academy; must obtain passing score prior to conditional offer.
  • Good verifiable work history.
  • Accredited high school diploma or GED (will not accept a certificate of completion).
  • Proficiency in verbal and written English.
  • At least 20 years of age.
  • U.S. Citizen.
  • Valid driver’s license for the last year; must have a valid Florida driver’s license prior to hire.
  • No felony conviction; no misdemeanor involving moral character, false statements, perjury or domestic violence.
  • Not dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • No illegal drug usage within the last year (other drug usage may be evaluated case by case).
  • Good physical condition.
  • Ability to perform patrol duties, respond to calls, conduct investigations, and interact with the public; maintain records and use radio/MDT communications; participate in searches, detentions, and transports as needed.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret information; ability to write reports; effective presentation and communication skills.
  • Maintain current certifications and training (e.g., firearms, first aid/CPR, FDLE requirements) and stay updated on policies and laws; maintain physical fitness.
  • Equipment maintenance and inventory responsibilities for issued gear and vehicles.
Examples of Duties
  • Conduct patrols, traffic stops, investigations, and security surveys; respond to incidents and enforce laws.
  • Interview complainants, suspects, witnesses, and victims; arrest and transport violators; secure crime scenes.
  • Prepare incident reports, affidavits, citations, and other required paperwork; maintain confidentiality and operate computers/MDT.
  • Coordinate with dispatch and other agencies; participate in special events and community policing efforts.
  • Initiate custodial actions such as Baker Act when applicable.
  • Review reports and testify in court; provide accurate information to prosecutors.

Processing time on average is 3-5 months.

Training:
Newly hired certified deputy sheriffs must participate in Deputy Orientation (4 weeks) covering high liability areas, followed by 14 weeks in the Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP). Prior law enforcement experience may qualify for accelerated FTEP but requires completion of Deputy Orientation.
