Overview
Starting salary: $62,566.40/yr - $64,771.20/yr with 4+ years of full-time law enforcement officer experience. The Orange County Sheriff's Office offers Academy Sponsorship Opportunities.

The incumbent in this position is responsible for the protection of life, property and the enforcement of laws and regulations. This work requires the ability to effectively use computer systems and electronic equipment; involves an element of personal danger; and entails frequent contact with the public under routine and emergency conditions. The incumbent is required to engage in the pursuit, apprehension, and arrest of law violators or suspected law violators, observed or when assistance is requested from dispatch or other deputy sheriffs.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
- Must be Florida Certified or Currently Attending a Florida Law Enforcement Officer Academy
: - Florida Certified (vested with authority to bear arms and make arrests):
Must have successfully completed the Florida Law Enforcement Officer Certification or Equivalency of Training from a Florida law enforcement academy and a passing score on the Florida law enforcement officer certification exam. - Currently Attending an Academy:
Must be currently attending a Florida law enforcement officer academy. Must obtain passing score on the state law enforcement officer certification exam prior to receiving a conditional offer.
Good verifiable work history.Accredited high school or GED diploma. (Will not accept a certificate of completion.)Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English.At least 20 years of age.U.S. Citizen.Valid driver's license for the last year.Must have a valid Florida driver's license prior to being hired.Must not have been convicted of a felony.Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral character, false statements, perjury or domestic violence.Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces.No illegal drug usage within the last year. Other drug usage will be evaluated on a case by case basis.Good physical condition.Ability to provide police omnipresence through routine patrol. Check buildings to verify and confirm security of the structure. Conduct residential and business security surveys and provides security tips.Ability to drive a motor vehicle and/or walk within residential or business areas to conduct routine patrol, surveillance, and investigative functions. Maintain constant engagement with the police radio for all transmissions to remain aware of pertinent activities. Back up other law enforcement officers and request backup assistance as necessary. Communicate with dispatchers regularly by phone, computer/MDT or radio. Respond to calls for assistance and/or to determine if a crime has occurred.
Investigate violations of Florida State Statutes, County Ordinances, and civil/criminal traffic infractions. May investigate violations of Federal Statutes. Interview complainants, suspects, witnesses, and victims. Arrest, search, and transport violators and/or prisoners. Communicate with supervisor per unit protocol. Conduct searches outdoors. Protect, secure, and process crime scenes. Establish a perimeter to contain a suspect when necessary. Evaluate tactical needs on every call for service.
Recover stolen property. Perform field sobriety tests. Conduct felony stops. Assist other units with special details as necessary. Conduct post-crime follow-up investigations. Hand delivers and serves warrants.Perform routine traffic stops and directs traffic when necessary. Intervene in domestic disputes. Respond to non-law enforcement related calls for service/assistance. Counsel parties involved in crisis. Investigate missing person’s cases. Assist other agencies with their respective functions as necessary. Communicate important information to concerned citizens. Initiate Baker Act procedures, which may require physically restraining and taking qualifying persons into custody. Transport persons to various facilities.
Hand delivers civil papers.Complete any necessary paperwork to include incident reports, Field Interview Reports, arrest affidavits, traffic citations, monthly statistics, administrative paperwork, and alarm notifications. Work with sensitive information and must maintain confidentiality at all times. Ability to operate a computer/MDT for purposes such as word processing, accessing databases, and maintaining electronic files.Initiate citizen contacts for various purposes. Assist motorists and pedestrians in need of assistance. Refer the public to the appropriate agencies or services as necessary.
