Position: Surgical Technologist, First Assistant - Labor & Delivery (Part-Time, Nights)

Overview

We are current seeking a Surgical Technologist, First Assistant to perform in the role of first assistant to the surgeon, able to perform all the duties associated with the Scrub Tech III role, demonstrating knowledge of anatomy, physiology and carrying out functions that will assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal patient results.

Type: Part-Time (24 hours)

Shift: Nights

Labor and Delivery Unit

The function of Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies (WPHWB) Labor and Delivery Unit is based on the primary care model principles. As a Level III Perinatal Center, comprehensive patient centered obstetrical nursing care is provided for both low and high-risk families during the antenatal, labor and delivery and immediate postpartum periods. The Labor and Delivery Unit (L&D) is composed of twenty eight (28) Labor and Delivery Rooms (LDRs) that provide the expectant family with the opportunity to remain together as a unit during labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period.

Labor and Delivery provides care for:

  • Mothers in active labor with expected delivery, with or without epidurals
  • Inductions of labor
  • Immediate postpartum recovery
  • Immediate newborn care post delivery
  • Complications of pregnancy requiring inpatient and outpatient evaluation
  • Emotional and physical care for patients requiring medical termination of pregnancy post-fetal demise
  • 24-hour Anesthesia service that is available for pain management in labor and anesthesia management during cesarean birth

Responsibilities

Serve as the first assistant to the surgeon and perform duties as a Scrub Tech III, demonstrating knowledge of anatomy and physiology and carrying out functions that aid in performing a safe operation with optimal patient results.

Qualifications

Education/Training

  • High School diploma
  • Graduate of accredited Surgical Technology program
  • Successful completion of an accredited First Assistant training course which includes didactic and supervised clinical learning components

Licensure/Certification

  • National certification as Surgical Technologist from one of the following is required:
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) – renews every 4 years
  • Tech in Surgery - Certified by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) – renewed annually
  • Maintains current BLS/Health Care Provider certification

Experience

Three (3) years of recent diversified surgical technology experience.
