Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • This position, with the Orange County Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), provides basic social services and intensive breastfeeding education to WIC participants in Orange County.
  • Serve as a lead in the Breastfeeding Department, perform basic supervisory duties, monitor employee workloads, deadlines and time utilization in the absence of the Breastfeeding Manager. Authorized access to confidential WIC client records and the WIC database.
  • Assignment of duty station, hours and days worked may vary based on agency/site needs. Travel within Orange County required. Align activities with state WIC policies and procedures (DHM 150-24).
  • Provide intensive breastfeeding support services for Orange County Health Department WIC and Nutrition program through individual support, group classes, and telephone contacts. Maintain client files and provide follow-up on referrals with proper documentation. Counsel on nipple shields, shells, electric pumps, etc., beyond the grant-funded peer counselor scope.
  • In the absence of the Breastfeeding Supervisor, supervise and monitor workloads, deadlines and time utilization. Motivate employees and volunteer peer counselors to maximize time and resources; ensure accuracy and integrity of work products.
  • Plan, conduct and evaluate in-service education and staff development sessions on breastfeeding for WIC and Health Department staff, and as assigned to community groups. Provide materials about WIC Services, Walk-In Breastfeeding Clinic and Breast Friends Moms Support Group meetings. Attend trainings and meetings; participate in conferences/workshops as assigned.
  • Assist in maintaining tracking systems for WIC participants, breast pump equipment and breastfeeding data. Record and report accurate data on all client contacts to the Breastfeeding Supervisor. Complete forms and paperwork in hard copy and electronically as required. Maintain thorough client contact records.
  • Perform other related duties as requested/required.

  • Strong knowledge of breastfeeding support and WIC services; ability to counsel clients individually, in groups, and by phone. Skilled in using and advising on breastfeeding aids beyond peer counselor scope (e.g., nipple shields, electric pumps). Accurate documentation, follow-up on referrals, and active IBCLC credential are essential.
  • Ability to assume supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Breastfeeding Supervisor, including monitoring staff workloads and deadlines. Strong leadership and communication skills to motivate staff and volunteers and to maintain resource efficiency and data integrity.
  • Ability to plan, deliver and evaluate breastfeeding education sessions for WIC staff, Health Department personnel, and community groups. Promote services such as Walk-In Breastfeeding Clinic and Breast Friends Moms Support Group. Engage in ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • Maintain tracking systems for WIC participants, breast pump equipment and breastfeeding data. Accurately record and report client contacts to the Breastfeeding Supervisor; complete required forms electronically and on paper; ensure thorough documentation of all interactions.
