We are seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Controller with a strong background in residential and multifamily property accounting. The Controller will oversee financial operations for a portfolio of assets, ensuring timely and accurate month-end financial reporting. This leadership role requires strong managerial skills, the ability to establish internal controls, and a customer service-focused attitude within the accounting team. The Controller will work closely with senior management and various departments to ensure the integrity of financial reporting and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee the preparation of monthly financial statements for the assigned portfolio. Ensure the timely completion of month-end closing activities and review financial packets for accuracy and adherence to company policies.
• Lead and support the property accounting team, providing direction, mentorship, and ensuring alignment with company goals. Foster a collaborative environment and a customer service-oriented approach within the department.
• Develop and enforce internal controls to safeguard company assets, improve workflows, and ensure adherence to accounting standards and policies.
• Manage cash activities, including approving wire transfers, releasing Positive Pay exceptions, and signing checks within established limits.
• Review and approve bank reconciliations prepared by Property Accountants for properties within the portfolio.
• Collaborate with Regional Managers (RMs) and Property Accountants to assist with forecasting and distribution calculations. Ensure accuracy and timely submission of financial reports.
• Oversee property tax payments, ensuring timely remittance and accurate recording in the financial statements. Manage the setup of sales tax accounts as necessary.
• Assist with audit inquiries and prepare schedules as needed. Manage critical payments, including owner distributions, insurance, mortgage, and tax payments.
• Undertake special projects and tasks as needed to support business needs and process improvements.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Proficiency in property accounting software (Yardi, Real Page, or TOPS preferred).
• Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Cash management expertise, with experience in planning and forecasting.
• Demonstrated ability to lead a team, provide mentorship, and drive collaboration across departments.
• Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written.
• Ability to analyze and comprehend financial statements and governing agreements.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in all aspects of financial reporting.
• Customer service orientation and strong interpersonal skills.
• Flexible and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial data with discretion.

Qualifications:

• 6+ years of accounting experience, with a focus on real estate accounting.
• Residential property accounting experience required; commercial accounting experience a plus.
• 4+ years in a senior-level Accounting or Finance Manager role, with experience managing a team.
• 4-year degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA preferred.
