A Snapshot of Your Day
Siemens Energy is looking for an experienced mechanical or aerospace engineer with a background in Structural Integrity to develop advanced technologies supporting the design, manufacturing, and service of Gas Turbine components exposed to extreme temperatures.
The Technology group is responsible for developing failure prediction methods for materials at elevated temperatures to meet next generation energy requirements. We are seeking candidates with a research background in failure analysis and structural integrity who enjoy solving problems and coming up with innovative solutions to unique problems. As part of a global support team, you will be working on a wide range of applications to develop life prediction methods which have a direct impact on company decisions.
Your daily work will include development and validation of new methods, supporting standard and innovative material testing, and developing new calculation codes to test applications to FEA with complex and probabilistic loading conditions.
How You’ll Make an ImpactDeveloping new life calculation methods to capture the complex thermal and mechanical loading conditions exhibited in turbine blades and vanes for an industry leader in this technology
Evaluation of component casting defects and nonconformance based on material properties and probabilistic lifing
Statistical curve fitting of test data and assessment of material variation impacts on component design
Probabilistic evaluations of full calculation process, including variations in material properties, component loading, and engine operation to define appropriate safety margins
Conducting fleet validation of new fatigue, creep, and fracture mechanics methods and properties for maturity to design utilization
Master’s or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering preferred, with a minimum of 3–5 years of related experience strongly preferred. Candidates with a Bachelors degree will be considered if they possess a strong, directly related background and relevant experience.
Advanced knowledge of failure modes such as fatigue, creep and fracture mechanics
Experience evaluating microstructure or geometry impacts on material life
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience and basic understanding of elements, boundary conditions, simulation types, and application of inelastic properties
Experience with lab testing, or coordination, to characterize material properties and corresponding statistical distributions
Strong background in data analysis, curve fitting, and statistics
Highly motivated, proactive and self-directed
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Knowledge of gas turbine component design and analysis
Programming experience (MATLAB, Python, C/C++, JAVA, Linux, etc.)
Characterization of Nickel superalloys
Understanding of microstructure and impact on failure modes
Background of probabilistic simulations with multiple parameter variations
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
