Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval - award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Summary
This position requires meeting the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements

Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy - English Language:
In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) - No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English - Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent degree
- The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State/Territory/Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
- Residency Training:
Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification - Residency approvals: VA-accredited residencies by ACGME or AOA, or other residencies with a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
- Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) and must be fully licensed; PRPs may be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis and are not considered independent practitioners

Board certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in Gastroenterology - Preferred experience:

- Physical Requirements:
Visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity; ability to walk/stand/sit for extended periods; may be exposed to infectious patients and contaminated materials; may need to don protective clothing - Must be able to assist with positioning of patients; must be physically, emotionally, and mentally competent to perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation
- The incumbent will serve as a full-time Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist
- Provide outpatient and electronic consultation services related to gastroenterology and hepatology
- Oversee the administration of conscious sedation
- Perform standard GI procedures such as EGD (upper endoscopy) and colonoscopies, and other procedures
- Diagnose, treat, and manage patients with gastrointestinal diseases using standard methods and techniques
- Collaborate with gastroenterology advanced practice providers across the Orlando Healthcare System
- Work with the section chief to support administrative duties
- Supervise outpatient activities of the gastroenterology section and supervise advanced practice providers
- Assist the section Chief in addressing congressional inquiries, patient complaints, discipline of staff, coverage, and daily activities of the section
