General

Description

Under general supervision, assists the Roadway Superintendent in planning, organizing and supervising activities related to the maintenance and construction of SR 408 roadway and local arterial roads, performs other work as required.

Key Duties
  • Responsible for assisting Roadway Superintendent, supervising, and coordinating work crews and equipment for work on streets and drainage within their assigned area.
  • Plans and organizes assigned work by evaluating conditions to determine which tasks should be performed in what order, and what materials or information is needed.
  • Inspects and follows up on assigned projects to ensure proper conduct of work and progress according to established schedules.
  • Ensure the Roadway Superintendent is kept abreast of job progress at all times.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems and assists other supervisors in solving work problems.
  • Ensures Company and site specific policies including safety rules and regulations are followed at all times.
  • Train personnel on current Public Works practices/methods and provide training to employees in the proper use of equipment.
  • Fills in for Roadway Superintendent during their absence.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Valid Florida driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • A High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in road construction or maintenance, with at least 4 years of supervisory experience over work crews.
  • Strong verbal, written communication and leadership skills.
  • Assists in the preparation of timekeeping and equipment reports.
Physical Demands
  • Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day.
  • Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform Key Duties.
  • Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 50 pounds personally.
  • Manual dexterity to hand‑carry generators, lumber and other construction materials, forms, power tools, and hand tools.
  • Physical dexterity involving stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions.
  • Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
  • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
  • Sufficient skill and visual acuity, under varying degrees of light, darkness, and weather conditions, to provide direction and flagging for operators of cranes with rated capacities of up to 300 tons.
  • The ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds (e.g., moving equipment, backing alarms, or other alarms, instructions/directions from supervisor and/or spotter).
Work Environment
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that are typically associated with a construction project.
  • Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
