Join Utah Valley University’s Grounds team and help shape a welcoming, sustainable campus environment. As a Landscape Specialist 1, you will work under the direction of the Director of Grounds to design and enhance attractive, functional outdoor spaces using waterwise techniques and sustainability best practices. From xeri/zero-scaping and planting trees, shrubs, sod, and rock features to planning the placement of benches, walkways, and other campus amenities, this role allows you to see your work come to life across the university.
This position offers the opportunity to collaborate closely with campus partners, including the Manager of Irrigation/Landscape, to plan and present landscape designs, manage projects within an annual budget, and support irrigation repair and maintenance. Ideal for individuals with a passion for landscape design, environmental stewardship, and hands‑on work, this role provides a meaningful way to contribute to UVU’s commitment to sustainability while creating spaces that enhance the daily experience of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Responsibilities- Oversees and performs renovations on campus, including landscape redesigns, utilizing water‑wise techniques and sustainability best practices. This includes xeri/zeroscaping and the planting of new trees/shrubs/sod and other landscaping across campus. Operates heavy equipment, such as backhoes, track hoes, skid steers, and various other landscaping equipment, to assist in the successful implementation of work being performed.
- Assists with irrigation repairs and maintenance, often working in teams with other Watermasters across campus.
- Conducts snow removal in a timely and safe manner on all UVU properties.
- Works closely with UVU Project Managers and professional landscape architects as needed.
- Performs other Grounds Specialist job‑related duties as assigned.
Graduation with a high school diploma and one year of related experience; OR any combination of job‑related experience and education totaling one year.
Knowledge- Knowledge of best practices and techniques in grounds and landscaping.
- Knowledge of safe operations when using heavy and small landscaping equipment.
- Knowledge of sprinkler and irrigation repair.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.
- Skilled in the operation of landscape equipment.
- Skilled in training and supervision of hourly employees.
- Skilled in time and resource management.
- Ability to mock up drawings and present areas of recommended renovations and redesigns to upper management.
- Ability to meet important Grounds and other UVU deadlines.
