Position Announcement

The Scenic Carpenter/Craftsperson at Utah Valley University plays a vital role in supporting high-quality performances and events within the School of the Arts. Working under the direction of the Scene Shop supervisor and assistant supervisors, this position helps bring creative visions to life by setting up, operating, and dismantling scenic and technical elements that support a wide range of productions. The role contributes directly to performances across Music, Theatre, Dance, Art & Design, the Noorda Series, and other special projects, making it an integral part of UVU's vibrant arts community.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work in a collaborative, creative environment and values contributing to meaningful artistic experiences. With variable hours that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on performance schedules, the Scenic Carpenter/Craftsperson offers dynamic work supporting live events and student learning. Applicants will find an engaging campus setting where technical skill, teamwork, and flexibility are valued in delivering professional-quality productions.

Summary of Responsibilities
  • Builds and manufactures scenic elements safely and effectively, supporting productions of the Department of Theatrical Arts for Stage & Screen, the Department of Dance, the Department of Music, and the Department of Art & Design. Facilitates the School of the Arts' needs.
  • Maintains the Scenic Workshop facilities and tools, and facilitates the safe storage and transfer of scenic elements and scenic properties to their designated storage areas at both on-campus and off-campus locations.
  • Strives to continue to develop skills within Scenic Workshop while maintaining current task completion.
  • Performs any other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

One year of experience in the field of scenic craftsmanship or any related field of building and/or construction.

Preferred Qualifications:
One or more semesters of Stagecraft.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the materials, methods, and tools used to construct scenic elements is beneficial but not required.
  • Knowledge of the arithmetic, algebra, and geometry required for the appropriate execution of scenic drawings and artistic renderings.
  • Knowledge of basic shop safety rules and basic shop safety procedures.
Skills
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Determining which tools, fasteners, and equipment are required to safely complete any assigned task.
  • Watching gauges, dials, and other available indicators to ensure a tool is working properly.
Abilities
  • Ability to quickly move and coordinate fingers, limbs, and body to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
  • Ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects.
  • Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
  • Ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.g., patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations).
