Position Overview

The Utah Valley University (UVU) Department of Music invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor of Commercial Music position. UVU is especially interested in candidates who make contributions in the pursuit of excellence for all members of the university community. The successful candidate will be an insightful and engaging educator who cultivates and sustains a rigorous learning environment.

Department Information

The Department of Music includes 250 undergraduate students pursuing commercial, education, and music performance degrees with seventeen full‑time faculty and forty‑five adjunct instructors. It is a unit within the School of the Arts and an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music. The School of the Arts opened the Noorda Center for the Performing Arts in 2019, which houses classroom, studio, production, rehearsal, and performance spaces, including a state‑of‑the‑art 900‑seat concert hall.

The Noorda hosts a robust concert season from School of the Arts student and faculty performers as well as an extensive professional performing arts series. With over 40,000 students, Utah Valley University is the largest university in Utah.

Teaching Responsibilities

Teaching responsibilities include courses in music technology, commercial composition/arranging, recording studio techniques, and supervision of the required internship program and other courses assigned by the department. Produce creative/scholarly activity that contributes knowledge to the commercial music field. Engage in relevant department, school, and university service which can include committee assignments, student recruiting, auditions, juries, and other contributions to the university and service region.

Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in music (ABD accepted)
  • Demonstrable ability to teach music production, including commercial writing/arranging, engineering, and recording studio techniques
  • Demonstrable knowledge of commercial music pedagogy from a producer, composer, or performer perspective
  • Must present a digital portfolio which includes works completed within the last three years, including teaching videos and compositions, final mixes and performance recordings (audio and video)
