Recon Craft is seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Lead Machinist to lead CNC and manual machining operations. This role is responsible for programming, setup, fabrication, quality oversight, and team leadership within our machine shop. The Lead Machinist will oversee a team of 2-3 operators, manage workflow priorities, and ensure high-quality production in alignment with engineering specifications and company objectives.
This position requires exceptional competence in CNC programming, manual machining, fixture design, and production leadership.
Responsibilities- Receive part drawings and 3D models from Engineering and generate NC toolpaths using Mastercam, with support from Solid Works as needed.
- Evaluate projects to determine specialized tooling or fixturing requirements; design and manufacture custom fixtures when necessary.
- Program and operate CNC vertical mills (3‑axis minimum; 4th and 5‑axis preferred).
- Work with YCM machines utilizing Fanuc CNC controls.
- Utilize machining and assembly drawings to interpret setups, critical features, tolerances, and dimensions.
- Perform and document QA/QC inspections, including recording dimensions and QC hold points in production travelers.
- Lead weekly scheduling meetings to align machining priorities with overall production schedules.
- Assign and delegate work to machining operators to meet deadlines and production goals.
- Collaborate with the Pre‑Fabrication Supervisor to improve machining workflows and continuously enhance processes for complex or custom designs.
- Capture and document redlines in accordance with company procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe machining environment.
- Perform additional duties as required to support company growth and operational objectives.
- Education and Certification
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Required Experience and Knowledge
- 5‑8 years of experience in a CNC machine shop programming and operating vertical mills, to include 3‑axis machining
- Experience leading small teams and delegating work effectively
- Proficiency in CAD/CAM software, including Mastercam and Solid Works
- Strong understanding of GD&T and blueprint interpretation
- Experience with Fanuc mill G‑code programming
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and apply detailed redlines
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)

- Preferred Qualifications
- Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in a related machining field
- Horizontal mill, machining cell, or turning center experience
- Machine tooling training certifications
- Solid Works training certificate and/or Solid Works PDM experience
- Experience with 4th and 5‑axis machining
- Demonstrated leadership of 3+ personnel
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Frequent bending, climbing, stooping, grasping, pushing, pulling, and reaching
- Ability to work extended hours when required to meet production deadlines
