Overview
Job Summary: This Associate Attorney position will report directly to the Managing Partner of Evictions and the firm’s National Eviction Outsourcing Platform. The attorney will work alongside the evictions’ support staff and carry their own caseload across the States of Oregon and Washington. The ideal candidate is already licensed to practice law in both Oregon and Washington. If not already licensed in both, the candidate must have at least one year of active practice immediately preceding their application for this role.
Experience with Plaintiff or Defense-Side eviction law, or other related experience representing landlords, tenants, creditors and/or loan servicers is a plus. Experience with jury trials is a significant plus.
Additional Context: This position requires teamwork as well as the ability to work independently when needed, staying current on laws affecting landlord and tenants’ rights in Oregon and Washington, taking ownership of assignments, and communicating directly with clients. Respect, teamwork and communication are essential.
Duties & Responsibilities- Handle all aspects of eviction cases in Oregon and Washington.
- Attend court hearings (when practical due to geographical location or remote/virtual hearing capabilities) on eviction cases in Oregon and Washington.
- Prepare and review documentation required to be filed for eviction cases in Oregon and Washington.
- Draft civil litigation documents ranging from discovery to dispositive motions and client correspondence with strong writing skills.
- Gain functional knowledge of Rent Control or Stabilization Ordinances and Just Cause Ordinances, with a goal to become an expert.
- Jury Trial experience is a plus.
- Think quickly and shift tasks as needed to meet daily needs.
- Field questions from staff and assist in an affable manner.
- Write, review, and edit reports, opinions, correspondence, alerts, bulletins, and articles for client notification and compliance purposes.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed.
- This job does not require direct supervisory responsibilities; however, you are expected to manage a caseload in conjunction with assigned staff as the responsible attorney.
- Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, particularly with respect to landlord/tenant rights. Ability to analyze case law and provide recommendations.
- Active membership in either the OR or WA State Bars, in good standing, with at least one year of active practice immediately preceding application (active membership in both OR and WA State Bars is a bonus).
- Professional appearance and positive company image.
- Minimum of 2+ years of related experience in landlord/tenant evictions, post-foreclosure evictions, or legal aid in defense of tenants with willingness to vigorously represent landlords is preferred; 5 years or more is a strong plus.
- Ability to work remotely as efficiently as in-office.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to multi-task, detail-oriented, flexible and personable.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ownership of assigned caseload.
- Proficiency with computer applications, technology, telephone, and Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
- Strong interpersonal skills to communicate respectfully with clients, attorneys, and outside parties.
- Team-oriented approach and problem-solving mindset; know when to escalate issues to management.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
- Flexibility and adaptability for fast growth.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to adapt to continual change.
- Proficiency in West Law and/or Lexis Nexis is required.
