ResponsibilitiesThe Para educator II assists the Teacher in the delivery of an instructional program and supports behavioral management and life skills development. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Conducts oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest traditions of public education and in support of the District’s mission.
- Assist in the academic instruction and presentation of instructional materials with small groups or individual students; reinforce instruction and follow up on specific language, spelling, reading, mathematics and other subject areas as directed by the Teacher.
- Monitor and oversee student tasks, practices and assignments; support with classroom assignments, homework, and projects.
- Independently implement individual and group behavior plans.
- Physically assist students in community-based activities offsite and accompany students on school buses or public transportation as needed.
- Prepare and implement instructional materials using technology and assistive devices; provide physical accommodation such as assisting in and out of mobility devices and lifting students when needed.
- Provide assistance including feeding, toileting, lifting, behavior support, and other physical assistance as required for students in specialized programs for various disabilities and ages.
- Guide and reinforce classroom rules and discipline; support development of emotional control and social behavior; coach students during job performance and monitor attendance.
- Setup work areas, displays, and distribute/collect materials; converse with teachers regarding lesson plans and materials to meet student needs.
- Supervise student activities across school settings (playground, cafeteria, bus loading, field trips, etc.).
- Prepare, administer, and score tests and assignments as directed; take data on student performance and enter into data systems when requested.
- May implement a Functional Living Program and coordinate training at community job sites aligned with each student’s goals.
- Perform various clerical duties using standard office equipment and software; maintain student records and confidentiality; support diverse student and parent populations.
Required Qualifications:
- Must possess an Associate’s degree, preferably with coursework in working with children in an educational setting.
- Or, in lieu of Item 1: high school diploma or GED and a passing score on a qualifying assessment measuring knowledge of reading, writing, and mathematics (assessment must meet ESEA requirements).
- District-approved Oregon behavioral intervention training certificate (without restrictions) prior to starting work and maintain it thereafter.
- Understanding of child development principles; training/experience in instructional techniques and behavior management with disabled children or adults is desired.
- Effective communication with employees and students; ability to collect data and perform basic math; strong reading and writing skills in English.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment; ability to pass a criminal background check.
Special Requirements
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license.
- Must be able to drive to alternate locations to support students.
Physical Requirements
