Job Details

Facility: Deer Ridge Correctional Institution, Madras, Oregon

Summary:

 Skilled HVAC‑R professional tasked with maintaining and optimizing HVAC‑R and energy systems, supervising adult‑in‑custody work crews, performing advanced diagnostics, and implementing energy‑saving solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise, instruct, and evaluate adult‑in‑custody workers in HVAC‑R maintenance and repair.
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex systems including electrical, electronic, pneumatic, and steam controls.
  • Monitor and maintain DDC/EMCS systems for energy management and performance.
  • Fabricate and install sheet‑metal ductwork.
  • Maintain logs for refrigerant usage and temperature control in culinary areas.
  • Repair and maintain food‑service equipment, hot water heaters, and space heaters.
  • Work in restricted areas where adult‑in‑custody labor is not authorized.
  • Assist in planning projects, securing permits, and maintaining inventory and documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, security, and licensing standards.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of a recognized HVAC/R apprenticeship program or two‑year HVAC/R accredited trade school AND two years of full‑time experience demonstrating the duties of the position.
  • OR four years of full‑time experience demonstrating the duties of the position.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Special Qualifications
  • Limited Maintenance Electrician (LME) license or higher (copy of license required).
  • Universal Refrigerant Handling certificate OR ability to obtain certification within six months of hire.
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license.
Requested Skills
  • Extensive knowledge of HVAC‑R systems, including commercial‑grade installation, diagnostics, and repair.
  • Background in vapor compression and refrigeration and ability to troubleshoot related systems.
  • Experience with Direct Digital Control (DDC) and Energy Management Control Systems (EMCS).
  • Experience supervising or leading work crews, assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and enforcing safety protocols.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Strong understanding of electrical and pneumatic control systems.
  • Experience planning and coordinating projects, estimating materials, maintaining inventory, and securing necessary permits.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a prison housing adult‑in‑custody on multiple security levels. Environments include new and old building structures, towers, walls, service tunnels, pipe chases, electrical chases, and multi‑floor housing with stairs. Conditions may involve poor ventilation, high temperatures, limited lighting, inclement weather, uneven ground, the use of ladders and scaffolding, exposure to asbestos or lead‑based paint, and the requirement to wear protective equipment.
