Wildlife SafariThe park opened in 1972 and is the only drive thru animal park in the state of Oregon. Wildlife Safari features over 550 animals representing their wild counterparts from all around the globe, making Wildlife Safari a true intersection of human and nature nestled into the picturesque hills of Southern Oregon. There is also a Walkabout Village for guests to meets many animals for free, with a gift shop, restaurant, train rides, and Barnyard.
Position OverviewThis is a full-time staff position, responsible for the development, implementation, coordination, marketing and evaluation of all educational programs. Some of the programs involved are:
Animal Ambassador Program, Kids’ Day Camps, Outreach presentations, and more. Other responsibilities are professional networking and participation in national zoological education associations; public relations, and public speaking.
- Works closely with the Executive Director and senior staff to develop long term strategic goals for the Education Department.
- Develops and implements department policies and procedures which provide for the safety of staff, volunteers, public, and animal collection.
- Assures compliance with ethical standards of the profession as adopted by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Zoological Association of America (ZAA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and other regulatory agencies.
- Maintains highest level of husbandry for department’s animal collection through proper scheduling, training and development of staff.
- Seeks to continuously develop educational value of collection. Recommends to Curator acquisition of animals to complement education’s collection.
- Works closely with other senior staff to develop educational programs and coordinate activities, which meet the goals and mission of Wildlife Safari.
- Cultivates and solidifies relationships with other education institutions to develop mutually beneficial programs and serve community’s zoological and conservation education needs.
- Works alongside staff in the daily tasks such as animal husbandry, keeper chats, and educational programming.
- Creates, markets and coordinates programs with local educational institutions and home school organizations.
- Creates modules, lessons, activities and programs to promote Safari’s education mission in a variety of settings e.g. camps, after school programs, etc.
- Makes learning fun and builds enthusiasm for Wildlife Safari education programs.
- Conducts outreach with education animal collection as requested by community.
- Works closely with other departments for cross training, utilizing other animal collections in public presentations, and to effectively promote education programming.
- Other duties as assigned.
Educational Requirements and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent is required. Additional Bachelor’s Degree in biology, zoology, animal science, educational, or other related field, or minimum three years experience in work relevant to zoo educational programming. Supervisory experience preferred.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work outdoors and indoors in extreme weather conditions. Able to bend, stoop, crawl and walk on uneven surfaces. Ability to lift up to 50 (fifty) pounds. Good physical health, ability to pass drug test (including marijuana) and negative TB test.
Additional Requirements
Demonstrated strong leadership, good communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work as a part of a team. Must have maintained a valid driver’s license for minimum of three years with a clean driving record of 3-5 years. Must be able to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and necessary overtime.
This is an all-round position requiring a flexible, motivated, and dedicated team player. Requires strong animal care, interpersonal, and leadership skills and the ability to work effectively with all levels of staff.
