This recruitment will fill one full‑time seasonal (June – September) Biological Sciences Research Technician 2:
Forest Data Collection position for the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources, and Management at Oregon State University. The role supports ongoing field data collection in forest types of Western Oregon, serves as crew leader for the Pacific Northwest Permanent Sample Plot Program, and requires leading a field crew, planning logistics, and ensuring compliance with OSU policies.
- Measure and map trees (50%)
- Identify tree, shrub, and herbaceous species of Pacific Northwest forests.
- Use diameter tape to measure trees.
- Use a compass and laser or tape to map tree locations.
- Assess condition of tree stem, canopy, and dead trees.
- Attach and maintain tree tags.
- Locate and navigate to study plots (20%)
- Use geoPDFs, GPS units, road maps, topographical maps, and compass to plan routes.
- Hike off‑trail in steep, brushy terrain to permanent plot locations.
- Reestablish plot corners if necessary.
- Record and check data quality and completeness (15%)
- Collect data using electronic recorders or paper forms.
- Review files for accuracy and completeness.
- Upload or scan data files.
- Lead work (15%)
- Provide guidance to the field crew.
- Ensure crew follows protocols and OSU policies.
Two years of college‑level courses in a biological science field and one year of related experience at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
What You Will Need- Two years of college‑level courses in forestry, botany, natural resources, environmental science or a closely related field and one year of related experience; or equivalent training.
- Demonstrated leadership skills or experience.
- Ability to follow complex data‐collection procedures.
- Experience in forest inventory methods and measurements.
- Experience navigating mountainous terrain using geoPDFs, GPS units, and map and compass.
- Ability to work independently and maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive work environment.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a motor vehicle history check.
- Experience with tree mortality symptoms and causes.
- Field experience identifying plant species and using taxonomic keys.
- Familiarity with woody and herbaceous plants of Western Oregon and Washington.
- Prior experience conducting field work for ecological research.
- First‑aid or wilderness first‑aid training.
- Wildland firefighting training.
- Work long hours outdoors in all weather conditions in a remote forested environment.
- Required work schedule: four consecutive 10‑hour days followed by three consecutive days off, subject to change.
- Crews based at HJ Andrews Experimental Forest; free housing at forest headquarters.
- Camping required when working in remote locations; stipend paid.
- Must be able to lift/carry up to 40 pounds.
Hourly wages: $18.06 – $26.20
