OverviewAs a CBPO, you will be part of a 60,000+ workforce that protects the American people by safeguarding borders, deterring illicit activity, and enhancing the nation’s economic prosperity.
Typical Assignments- Enforce customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations.
- Facilitate the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
- Conduct inspections of individuals and conveyances.
- Determine admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States.
- Prevent illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and contraband.
Preference may be given for the following mission‑critical locations. If these locations are full at the time of offer, you may be assigned to another U.S. location based on operational needs.

Newly appointed CBPOs receive up to a $15,000 incentive per year for a three‑year service contract in the following locations:

For a four‑year service contract, incentives apply to:

- Annual base salary varies: GS‑5 and GS‑7 $ 40,332 – $109,952 per year.
- Locality pay varies by duty location.
- Up to $45,000 in overtime pay.
- Career ladder with progression: GS‑5, GS‑7, GS‑9, GS‑11, GS‑12.
- Health, dental, insurance plans, annual and sick leave, Thrift Savings Plan.
GS‑5:
General work experience or education.
- Experience:
Minimum of three (3) years full‑time general work experience. - Education:
Bachelor’s degree or successful completion of a 4‑year college program. - Combination:
Both experience and education.
GS‑7:
Specialized experience or education.
- Experience:
Minimum of one (1) year specialized full‑time work experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. - Education:
Bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (3.0 GPA or higher) or one full year of graduate‑level education. - Combination:
Specialized work experience plus graduate‑level education.
GS‑9:

Other Requirements:
- Citizenship: U.S. Citizen.
- Residency:
Primary U.S. residency for at least three (3) of the last five (5) years. - Age Restriction:
Must be under 40 on application date unless exempt (military, federal law enforcement, or Veterans’ Preference). - Veterans’ Preference:
Eligible for excepted service Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA).
Paid pre‑academy orientation (~2 weeks) at home port. 101‑day CBP Field Operations Academy at FLETC, Glynco, GA. Southern border, Miami, or Puerto Rico duty locations require online Spanish training program. Successful completion is required.
