About the Position
The Lead Library Specialist serves as a lead worker within a library division and is responsible for directing, training, and guiding library staff and volunteers. The position assists with scheduling, planning, and the preparation of employee performance evaluations and provides input on the operation and development of division services. The Lead Library Specialist may organize, coordinate, and deliver programming and outreach to community members.

Each Lead Library Specialist is responsible for a specific set of duties in either the Circulation or Extensions Division; however, they may also be required to perform duties in all position assignments.

Essential Duties
  • Direct and lead the work of division staff and volunteers. Schedule staff and volunteers for public service points to ensure adequate staffing to provide and maintain division services. Communicate with supervisor about staff performance. Provide input concerning performance evaluations. Review timesheets of regular and casual staff. Act as division volunteer liaison.
  • Perform full range of circulation functions. Answer and refer patron inquiries and serve as a staff resource. Staff a service desk which includes issuing library cards, checking materials in and out, collecting fees, placing holds on materials, answering the phone, emptying materials bins, sorting, transferring materials to carts, shelving, and providing various circulation services. Uphold patron privacy and confidentiality of library records.
  • Work in coordination with various division supervisors and other lead library specialists to develop and maintain training and onboarding materials. Take a lead role in ensuring that staff are adequately trained in their position responsibilities.
  • Support and/or participate in the recruitment process for staff and volunteers.
  • Resolve customer complaints and concerns by explaining library policies, programs, and services. Answer patron questions and make appropriate referrals to librarians and other system and community resources. Assist public in locating materials through print, non-print, and electronic resources.
  • Communicate information to staff including policy, procedures, and duties, and support employee engagement efforts. Provide guidance and assistance to staff and volunteers. Support the development and implementation of department procedures and policies.
  • Purchase supplies. May monitor work group budget.
  • Provide support to Library Management Team by completing special projects, handling routine and non-routine administrative duties, and compiling/presenting statistical reports.
  • Communicate effectively across multiple work locations using a variety of tools.
  • Work closely with supervisor to support coordination of activities with staff from other library divisions.
  • Serve as Person In Charge of facility as needed; handling issues such as security, emergencies, and other problems as they occur.
  • Operate and drive a motor vehicle safely and legally.
  • Act ethically and honestly; apply ethical standards of behavior to daily work activities and interactions. Build confidence in the City through own actions.
  • Conform to all safety rules and performs work in a safe manner.
  • Participate in the Emergency Management program including planning, classes, training sessions, exercises and emergency events as required.
  • Maintain effective work relationships.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to diverse audiences.
  • Adhere to all City and Department policies.
  • Arrive to work, meetings, and other work-related functions on time and maintains regular job attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Assignments

Extensions Division
Take a lead role in organizing, coordinating, designing, and delivering programming and outreach to community members. Delegate work to Community Library Specialists and collaborates with Adult and Youth Services staff to develop and implement programs and events in branch locations. May serve as a point of contact for security or facility needs in any of the branch libraries.
