Position Summary

Since 1938, generations of campers have come to experience the joy and beauty of Camp Silver Creek. Located deep inside Oregon's Silver Falls State Park, historic Camp Silver Creek is a magical place for children and adults alike. We are actively hiring great role models who are energetic, collaborative, and hard working to join the team for this summer.

The Role

The Leader-In-Training Lead is responsible for all aspects of the L.I.T. program at Camp Silver Creek. They plan and implement all activities and aspects of the L.I.T. program, provide guidance for the staff and campers participating in the program, live in the unit with their staff and campers, lead training and activities for L.I.T.’s, manage and monitor staff, and support campers’ behavior or other needs.

Essential

Functions
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Programs, Camp Director, and Camp Silver Creek L.I.T. team to design and implement all aspects of the Leader-In-Training program.
  • Lead the L.I.T. program upon its start, facilitating all training and activities for participants.
  • Evaluate L.I.T. participants, providing feedback and making staffing recommendations based on performance and observations.
  • Assign L.I.T.s to staff mentors for shadowing experiences and conduct regular check-ins during their shadow week.
  • Supervise all counselors and unit aides assigned to the unit, ensuring smooth daily operations and adherence to camp expectations.
  • Provide daily check-ins, support, and leadership to counselors and unit staff.
  • Monitor staff behavior, providing coaching and mentorship to uphold camp standards and escalating ongoing concerns to the Camp Director as needed.
  • Guide and support staff in handling camper behavioral situations, offering strategies for positive behavior management.
  • Assign unit staff to weekly duties, ensuring clarity in roles and responsibilities.
  • Participate in weekly staff assignments, collaborating with Unit Leads, Kitchen Directors, and the Assistant Directors of Programs and Operations.
  • Communicate with parents during check-in and check-out, ensuring a welcoming and professional experience.
Requirements Entry Requirements
  • At least 18 years of age
  • At least 1 prior summer of overnight camp counseling experience
  • Prior leadership experience with groups of children in camps, youth programs, educational settings, or community groups
  • Experience and knowledge in teen leadership programs, and prior work with adolescents ages 13-15
  • Prior experience developing and implementing curriculum, preferably in a camp setting
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience organizing or scheduling large groups.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Must be CPR and First Aid certified or willing to become certified within the first 30 days of employment. (Certification classes available upon employment.)
  • Current Oregon Food Handler’s Certification, or ability to obtain certification.
Availability

Must be available during all of the following dates:

  • June 7 - June 13 (Program Staff Retreat)
  • June 14 - June 20 (Mandatory All-Staff Training)
  • July 5 - July 25 (Three L.I.T. Sessions)
Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Must be physically capable of observing and listening for stressful situations at all times.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to quickly reach a person and/or situation to prevent harm.
  • Capable of effective and appropriate mental, emotional and social responses in a constantly changing, youth centered environment.
