Job Summary:

The Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of students to and from the designated school. This role ensures a secure and orderly environment on the school bus and promotes a positive relationship with students, parents, and school personnel through excellent customer service and professionalism.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safely operate a school bus along assigned routes, including to and from school, field trips, and extracurricular events.
  • Ensure the safety and discipline of all passengers by following established procedures and protocols.
  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle to ensure operational safety and cleanliness.
  • Maintain accurate records of routes, times, student attendance, and any incidents or maintenance concerns.
  • Report any mechanical issues, safety concerns, or accidents promptly to the Transportation Coordinator or designated supervisor.
  • Monitor and adhere to all federal, state, and local traffic laws and transportation regulations.
  • Provide courteous and professional communication with parents, students, and school personnel.
  • Assist students in boarding and exiting the vehicle as needed, particularly young children or students with disabilities.
  • Attend all required training sessions, safety meetings, and professional development programs.
  • Maintain current and valid licensure and certifications in accordance with state and district requirements.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school bus (S) and passenger (P) endorsements.
  • Minimum of one year of commercial or school bus driving experience preferred.
  • Clean driving record and ability to pass background and drug screening requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to student safety and well-being.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of basic vehicle safety checks and preventative maintenance practices.
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods, operate vehicle controls, and remain alert. The employee must be able to communicate effectively, use hands to operate equipment, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. The role may also require walking, bending, kneeling, or assisting students with mobility needs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work

Environment

This position is based in a mobile school transportation environment. Exposure to varying weather conditions is common, and the noise level can be moderate to high. The employee may be subject to long hours, early mornings, or split shifts depending on the transportation schedule. Field trip assignments and school event coverage may require occasional evening or weekend availability.

FLSA Classification

This position is classified as Non‑Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is in accordance with applicable federal and South Carolina labor laws.
