Operator Apprentice, Collection - Wastewater (Pay Range $16.71 - $26.73 / hour)

The purpose of this classification is to install, maintain and repair wastewater system infrastructure for the Wastewater Division of the Department of Public Utilities. Incumbents are under close supervision and learn how to inspect and analyze system conditions and complete job functions to maintain compliance with applicable local, state and federal environmental and safety rules and regulations.

• Performs general maintenance, cleaning, and repair duties related to the wastewater collection system.
• Inspects large main sewers for necessary repairs.
• Repairs asphalt and concrete after repairs to wastewater collection system.
• Receives and completes work orders.
• Utilizes, operates and maintains various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments.
• Adheres to established safety procedures.
• Communicates with supervisor, other employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
• Performs other related duties as required.
• Subject to stand-by and 24-hour call; may be required to work after normal business hours, weekends, and holidays in the event of a natural disaster, sewage overflows and blockages, wastewater main breaks, emergencies, or any other disruption of service.

• High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of work experience that shows an ability to maintain steady employment in any field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

• Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver’s License and reside in the Orangeburg area.
