Overview
The Security Officer reports to the Director of Security. Under general supervision, the Security Officer monitors and provides protection and security for facilities, premises, employees, patients and visitors. This position responds to security calls within the medical center and conducts basic investigations as well as troubleshooting of the electronic visitor management system. The role requires the ability to physically patrol the perimeter of the medical center and parking lot and to communicate tactfully with the public.
Knowledge of security methods in buildings and grounds is preferred, and this position involves shift work and some overtime.

Minimum Requirements- Must be 21 years of age.
- Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
- At least 1 year experience in Security or equivalent job functions is preferred but not required.
1) Continuous – 8-12 hours per shift;
2) Frequent – 2-6 hours per shift;
3) Infrequent – 0-2 hours per shift. Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, and working indoors or outdoors in temperature extremes. Ability to work from elevated areas, in confined/cramped spaces, kneeling, bending, twisting, reaching, lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs unassisted, and other listed physical capabilities. Ability to use upper and lower extremities for balance, coordination, and manipulation as described in the original.
- Investigative (20%)
- Operate and conduct basic investigative techniques of the electronic visitor management system (Raptor).
- Interview and obtain detailed information from victims/witnesses to complete reports. Documentation supports committees and leadership requests and must be accurate.
- Success Criteria:
Reviewing information thoroughly; taking notes as appropriate; documenting all witnesses to the event; completing all reports in a timely manner.
- Patrol (20%)
- Respond to calls for service 24/7 throughout the medical centers.
- Physically patrol the perimeter and negotiate stairwells (ground floor – 3rd floor); assist with Helicopter operations on the helipad.
- Engage in physical restraint when necessary and recover weapons from patients, families, and visitors.
- Conduct weapon detection protocols during Gun Shot/Wound operations in the Emergency Department and check in/release bodies to morgue as required.
- Success Criteria:
Timely response; de-escalation of aggressive behaviors; knowledge of quickest routes for calls; proper weapon detection protocols; familiarity with codes and policies; proper morgue documentation.
- Parking (20%)
- Perform routine patrols of parking lots by foot, vehicle, or golf cart to deter crime and assist visitors and staff.
- Locate and issue tickets for unauthorized parking violations.
- Success Criteria:
Knowledge of parking policies and maps; ability to manage violators and issue appropriate tickets.
- Professionalism (20%)
- Professionally greet patients, families, and visitors; communicate effectively.
- Educate on services and resources and assist with way finding.
- Success Criteria:
Familiarity with MUSC services and resources; professional appearance and interactions.
- Other (20%)
- Demonstrate commitment to problem resolution with a focus on efficient solutions and adherence to policies/processes.
- Meet key performance metrics for the area and comply with policies and processes.
- Success Criteria:
Familiarity with MUSC policies and procedures; ability to solve problems for desired outcomes.
