Job Overview
Join MUSC Health – Orangeburg as a Rapid Response Registered Nurse (RN). This full‑time position (36 hours per week, three 12‑hour shifts, rotating weekends) supports bedside teams by identifying clinical deterioration, performing focused assessments, and responding to medical emergencies and rapid response alerts.
Key Responsibilities- The Rapid Response RN enhances patient safety by identifying clinical deterioration, performing focused assessments, and responding to Medical Emergencies and Rapid Responses.
- The role supports bedside teams through collaboration, real‑time education, and use of MEWS and high‑risk indicators.
- Prioritizes proactive patient rounding and focused assessments, using MEWS scores, prior medical history, admission location, and other high‑risk indicators to guide decision‑making.
- Works closely with nursing staff, Patient Care Technicians, Hospitalist Medicine providers, Intensivists, Pulmonologists, and other clinical partners.
- Responds to all Medical Emergency and Rapid Response notifications, BAT Alerts, and nurse‑driven requests for evaluation.
- Assesses high‑risk patients each shift, with ongoing coaching and real‑time education to support staff competency in MEWS scoring, recognition of clinical deterioration, and escalation procedures.
- Monitors and processes Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), identifies trends, and contributes to performance‑improvement initiatives to support a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Assists with unit staffing when needed and cross‑trains in the Nursing Supervisor role, serving in that capacity as appropriate.
- If the Rapid Response Team initiative is no longer sustainable, transitions into existing clinical vacancies to support organizational needs.
- Previous Critical Care or Emergency Department RN experience required.
- Must demonstrate the ability to practice effectively in high‑stress, fast‑paced environments.
- Associate Degree in Nursing required;
Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred. - If ADN, BSN required within two years of hire.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Active South Carolina RN license required.
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required.
- Must obtain PALS, TNCC, ENPC & Safety Care certifications following hire, as part of the clinical competency expectations.
- Ability to stand, walk, or sit for prolonged periods.
- Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to perform clinical tasks safely.
- Ability to lift, move, or reposition patients and equipment.
- Adequate visual acuity and color perception for reading monitors, charts, and medications.
- Sufficient hearing to communicate effectively and respond to clinical alarms.
- Physical and emotional stamina to work long shifts and manage high‑stress situations.
- Mobility to navigate patient care units and respond rapidly to emergencies.
- Adherence to MUSC Health infection prevention practices, including use of PPE and compliance with isolation protocols.
