Job Description Summary
The Phlebotomy Technician I reports to the Laboratory Manager. Under general supervision, the Phlebotomy Technician I is responsible for preparing patients for blood collection, collecting blood from patients, ensuring accurate labeling, and delivering this blood to the laboratory for testing. This role plans and provides professional phlebotomy services to patients in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Job Description

The Phlebotomy Technician I is expected to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and behaviors which are consistent with the Standards of Behavior as outlined by the Medical University Hospital Authority. Individuals at this level have successfully achieved the goals and objectives of orientation. They are learning and adjusting to their full professional role. Much energy and attention is focused on task and skill acquisition, and on recognizing important situational elements which can only be learned through experience.

Phlebotomy processes and other related activities must be guided and/or supervised by other phlebotomists who have achieved a competent level of practice.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Patient Preparation & Blood Collection: Prepare patients for blood collection, ensuring the correct techniques are used in obtaining blood specimens.
  • Specimen Labeling & Delivery: Accurately label blood samples and deliver them to the laboratory for timely testing.
  • Compliance with Procedures: Adhere to established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines to ensure the accuracy and efficiency of phlebotomy services.
  • Professional Service Delivery: Provide high-quality phlebotomy services while maintaining professionalism and sensitivity to patient needs.
Expectations:
  • Knowledge & Skill Development: Demonstrate continued development in phlebotomy techniques, with a focus on skill acquisition and the refinement of knowledge.
  • Behavioral Standards: Exhibit behavior consistent with the Standards of Behavior as outlined by the Medical University Hospital Authority, including professionalism, teamwork, and adherence to ethical standards.
  • Supervision & Guidance: Perform phlebotomy tasks under the guidance and supervision of more experienced phlebotomists. While independent practice is a goal, initial work will be supervised until a competent level of practice is achieved.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of phlebotomy training or equivalent education.
  • Ability to learn and apply phlebotomy techniques in a clinical environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, with a focus on patient care and comfort.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adhere to strict procedural guidelines.
Additional Job Description

Education: High School Degree or Equivalent

Work Experience: 0-6months.

Credentials: Completed Accredited Phlebotomy Certificate Course.
