Your Role on the TeamPosition Summary:
As a member of the UCI Health leadership team, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President, the Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO) provides visionary leadership for the digital transformation of a $5 billion academic health system comprising multiple hospitals, ambulatory clinics, surgery centers, and a growing population health platform.
The CDIO is responsible for program development and oversees information technology operations management for patient care, research, education, and administration. This executive is accountable for shaping and executing a cohesive digital health strategy that aligns with the organization's tripartite mission of clinical excellence, research advancement, and medical education.
The CDIO has primary responsibility for the delivery of Information Technology and telecommunications solutions and overall operational effectiveness of technology within UCI Health. The role oversees enterprise IT, digital platforms, data and analytics, cybersecurity, research informatics, and technology infrastructure, ensuring these functions operate securely, efficiently, and in service of improved health outcomes, operational performance, and strategic growth. The CDIO provides direct oversight of technology infrastructure, enterprise systems and services, and oversees processes to promote advancement and knowledge dissemination across UCI Health.
This is a highly interactive and inclusive position that requires direct collaboration with Health leadership, IT leadership, UCI campus IT colleagues, leadership within the College of Health Sciences and associated schools, University of California colleagues, and the Office of the President. The role partners closely with clinical, academic, and administrative leaders to enable advanced analytics, clinical trials, and translational research through informatics tools and secure data environments.
The CDIO also champions digital patient engagement, supports value-based care initiatives, and fosters a culture of innovation, talent development, and change readiness across the enterprise. This role focuses on planning, assessment of new technologies, deployment to ensure optimal interoperability, value creation, and ensuring all technologies are appropriately cyber secured.
Minimum Education Requirements
Required
- Undergraduate degree
- Master's degree in business, hospital administration, computer science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred
- Graduate degree, e.g., MBA, MS, etc.
- Certification in healthcare IT leadership (e.g., CHCIO, CPHIMS)
- Executive education in digital strategy, innovation, or data science
Required Experience
- A minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressive experience within information technology.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of significant IT senior leadership experience, preferably within complex health institution environments, including: strategic planning, project planning, budgeting, leading the efforts of directors and managers responsible for operating a range of IT services.
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in information technology, digital transformation, or health informatics.
- 5+ years in senior or executive leadership roles within complex healthcare delivery systems, ideally including academic medical centers or integrated health systems.
- Demonstrated success leading large-scale EHR implementations, digital health transformations, or enterprise analytics initiatives.
- Experience overseeing clinical and operational technologies (EHR, ERP, PACS, RCM, CRM, etc.).
- Strong track record in data governance, enterprise data warehousing, and enabling AI/machine learning applications in healthcare.
