Overview

UCI Health is the clinical enterprise of the University of California, Irvine, and the only academic health system based in Orange County. It includes UCI Medical Center, a 459‑bed acute care hospital, four additional hospitals, affiliated physicians and ambulatory care centers across Orange, Los Angeles and Riverside counties. As a nationally recognized institution, UCI Medical Center provides tertiary and qua ternary care, including a National Cancer Institute‑designated comprehensive cancer center, high‑risk perinatal/neonatal programs, Level I trauma, and a burn center.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct supervision to pharmacists and licensed technical staff in outpatient pharmacy.
  • Secure timely and accurate authorizations, address retro‑authorizations, resolve request for information (RFIs) and support charge capture activities.
  • Balance operational oversight, staff development, quality assurance and process improvement to ensure smooth pharmacy order coverage.
  • Advising pharmacy leadership, interpreting and implementing policies, and ensuring compliance with departmental, payer, accreditation and regulatory standards.
  • Manage work queues, meet deadlines and align processes with organizational goals, payer requirements and state/federal laws.
  • Ensure optimal reimbursement for high‑cost specialty medications across UCI Health centers, clinics and cancer centers.
  • Maintain an active California pharmacist license and stay current on drug references, Joint Commission, ACHC, URAC and other regulatory standards.
Qualifications – Required
  • Team player with a positive attitude.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and authorization management systems.
  • Pharm D degree from an ACPE‑certified school.
  • Minimum 3 years of licensed pharmacist experience and 3 years of professional clinical pharmacy experience at a specialty pharmacy or equivalent training.
  • Minimum 1 year of supervisory experience in a healthcare setting or authorization lead role.
  • Knowledge of payer requirements, billing terminology, claims processes, limited distribution restrictions, REMS, cold chain distribution and medication delivery systems.
  • Strong clinical problem‑solving skills and ability to educate and supervise support staff.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills and strong time‑management.
  • Dependable attendance and job performance.
  • Current BLS or ACLS certification upon hire.
  • Active California registered pharmacist license.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, collaborate cross‑functionally, manage projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • 2+ years in a medical billing, prior authorization or revenue cycle role.
Qualifications – Preferred
  • Strong clinical background in specialty pharmacy disease states.
  • Active membership in professional societies.
  • Medication Therapy Management experience.
  • Licensing in additional states.
  • Knowledge of URAC, ACHC standards and UC human resources policies.
  • Immunization certification.
  • Experience with revenue cycle management, charge capture and denial prevention.
  • Experience with laboratory billing software (e.g., Telcor, Xifin, Quadax).
  • Experience in a large academic medical center or multi‑specialty practice setting.
  • Certified Specialty Pharmacy Advanced Practice degree, ASHP Ambulatory/ Specialty residency, Specialty Pharmacy Certification or equivalent.
  • Experience operating EPIC Willow Ambulatory (WAM) system.
