Position: Specialist I- Beach Ambassador, Nights, & Grounds

JOB SUMMARY

The Specialist I – Coastal Resources position supports the City of Orange Beach Department of Coastal Resources through a combination of beach monitoring, public education, debris removal, and grounds maintenance
. This role is an integral part of the City’s Leave Only Footprints (LOF) program and is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and accessible public beach areas, accesses, parking lots, and adjacent facilities.

Duties include marine debris and trash removal, public outreach and education, light maintenance and custodial work, vehicle/UTV operation, recycling and materials handling, and assistance with wildlife incidents and city-wide events. The position also supports other departmental divisions and programs as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Monitor beaches, shoreline areas, and public accesses for debris, safety concerns, and potential enforcement issues.
  • Remove trash, marine debris, abandoned equipment, and other materials from beaches, waterways, beach accesses, parking lots, Fish Park, and surrounding areas.
  • Collect, transport, sort, shred, and process materials for recycling or disposal.
  • Remove trash bags from public accesses and facilities as needed.
  • Clean loose trash and debris from boardwalks, accesses, and surrounding areas.
  • Maintain facilities, boardwalks, and access areas through basic custodial, maintenance, and light construction tasks.
  • Serve as an educational ambassador for Coastal Resources programs, including Leave Only Footprints (LOF).
  • Interact professionally with the public, beach vendors, and visitors regarding rules, safety, and environmental stewardship.
  • Deliver educational presentations, assist with field trips, and attend public events as needed.
  • Assist with wildlife-related incidents and document observations and actions taken.
  • Operate and maintain City vehicles, including 4x4 vehicles, ATVs, and UTVs, in off-road and public environments.
  • Maintain inventories of equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Complete required reports and maintain records, including activity logs, debris reports, wildlife incidents, accident reports, and public interactions.
  • Assist with city-wide events and support other departmental divisions and programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to read and understand laws, regulations, and departmental policies.
  • Knowledge of local beaches, waterways, roadways, and public access areas.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, volunteers, and the general public.
  • Strong verbal communication skills for public interaction and education.
  • Basic math skills for maintaining records and reports.
  • Basic computer skills for report preparation and documentation.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and make decisions in accordance with established policies.
  • Ability to safely operate 4x4 vehicles, ATVs, and UTVs in off-road environments near people and obstacles.
  • Ability to safely operate common hand tools, power tools, and small equipment.
