About the Job – Your RoleOur physical plant team plays a crucial role in ensuring our facilities are safe, functional, and well maintained. The Welder 2 performs journey-level trades work, including project design and construction of metal and nonferrous structures, performs post-welding cleanup, general welding, and inspecting finished work for specification compliance. As a Welder 2, you will:
- Perform Journey-Level Welding & Fabrication
- Design, plan, and construct metal and nonferrous structures using advanced welding techniques (SMAW, MIG, TIG, brazing).
- Prepare, cut, and fit materials to ensure high-quality finished products.
- Inspect and finish work for compliance with specifications.
- Lead & Train AIC Work Crews
- Coordinate workflow and assign tasks to Adults in Custody (AIC) work crews.
- Instruct and train AICs in safe and efficient operation of tools and equipment.
- Monitor performance, maintain security, and enforce rules and procedures.
- Ensure Safety & Security
- Conduct daily frisk and area searches.
- Maintain inventory of controlled items and tools.
- Supervise AICs inside and outside secure perimeters.
- Preventative Maintenance & Project Planning
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive Preventative Maintenance Program.
- Assist with project planning, estimates, and inventory management.
- Keep accurate logs of work performed and materials used.
This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.
Minimum QualificationsAssociates of Applied Science in Welding Fabrication AND one year of experience including design work;
OR
Two (2) years and six (6) months experience as a skilled welder. One year of this experience must include design work.
Requested Skills- Certified multi‑process welding proficiency, including SMAW, MIG, TIG, and brazing for ferrous and nonferrous materials.
- Advanced metal fabrication skills, including material fit‑up, torch setup, equipment adjustments, and use of grinders, drill presses, hacksaws, and cutting tools.
- Blueprint and specification interpretation, with the ability to inspect, verify, and finish welds to required standards.
- Preventative maintenance planning experience, including creating written maintenance schedules, tracking repairs, and keeping accurate logs of work performed.
- Crew leadership and training skills, especially in coordinating workflow and teaching safe tool/equipment operation within secure environments.
- Strong security and accountability practices, including searches, controlled‑item tracking, contraband prevention, and perimeter‑related movement supervision.
